Apple released iOS 27.1 today, hours before the first iPhone Duo units reach customers. There is a catch that makes this release unlike any iOS update before it: it is not available for any other iPhone. If you own an iPhone 18 Pro, an iPhone 17, or anything older, iOS 27.1 will never appear on your phone.
The foldable gets its own operating system, at least for now. And on the same day, Apple published the first official list of apps actually built for the Duo’s two screens. Taken together, the software story is now the clearest signal of how Apple thinks the foldable era should work.
Why the Duo skipped iOS 27 entirely
Back in September, Apple told CNET in an email that the iPhone Duo would launch with iOS 27.1 rather than the iOS 27 everyone else got on September 14. The quote: the new version “builds on the foundation of iOS 27 but introduces features that were purpose-built for the new foldable design.”
That is a bigger deal than it sounds. Apple has shipped one iOS for every iPhone since 2007. The Duo’s folding hardware, two displays at 5.4 and 7.6 inches, and the way apps hand off between them needed interface code that simply does not apply to a slab phone. Rather than bolting foldable logic onto everyone’s update, Apple forked the release.
One practical wrinkle, reported by The Apple Post: the iOS 27.1 build installed on Duos at the factory is already older than the build Apple released today. Expect a software update waiting during setup on day one.
What iOS 27.1 actually changes on the foldable
The release notes center on three things. First, support for the two Super Retina XDR OLED displays, the 5.4-inch outer screen at 2034 by 1398 and the 7.6-inch inner screen at 2670 by 1878, both running 120Hz with up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. Second, the way apps transition between the two screens, so opening the phone mid-task does not restart what you were doing. Third, multitasking layouts built around the unfolded canvas.
More Duo-specific features are already confirmed down the road. Apple says Reachability support for the foldable arrives later this year, and developers are still updating apps for the format. The software will keep evolving after launch, which is another way of saying the day-one experience is a starting point.
The launch-day app list: Netflix and Zoom are in, Word is weeks away
Hardware without apps is an expensive paperweight, so Apple’s newsroom post today matters as much as the OS. The first official list of iPhone Duo-optimized apps names Netflix, Prime Video, Zoom, Slack, and dozens more, all built with the iOS 27.1 SDK and Xcode 27.1.
From today, optimized apps get a “Made for iPhone Duo” badge and dedicated App Store collections. The gaps are honest ones: Microsoft Word and Outlook arrive in the coming weeks, and some games and delivery apps land in November or later. If your must-have app is missing, check for the badge before you buy the phone, not after.
Apple is also playing the long game with developers. Starting in April 2027, all new App Store submissions must include iPhone Duo screenshots, and apps that never get optimized will keep running with black borders on the inner display. The badge program is the carrot; the screenshot mandate is the stick.
iOS 27.2 reunites the lineup later this month
The split is temporary. Apple has said every device, including the Duo, will update to iOS 27.2 later this year. The 27.2 release candidate landed on October 19, and the public release is expected before the end of the month, bringing the redesigned Health app, Siri in five new languages, and Group FaceTime dual capture to the rest of the lineup.
The likely shape of Apple’s software calendar from here: Duo-specific branches when the foldable needs them, a unified release when it does not. For everyone else, the next tap of “Software Update” is 27.2, not 27.1.
Launch day logistics: price, stock, and the October 28 event
The Duo goes on sale in stores today starting at $1,999 in the US and £1,999 in the UK, which works out to roughly ₹1.9 lakh at today’s exchange rate (Apple has not announced official India pricing). First deliveries are reaching customers in Australia and New Zealand, with the rollout continuing through Friday. Another 28 countries and regions join on October 30.
Stock remains the constraint. Analyst Jeff Pu estimates 2026 shipments were revised down from about 7 million to 6 million units on hinge component limits, and Apple has no stock set aside for walk-in buyers today. If you are still deciding, the first reviews praise the hardware and warn the apps are not ready yet, and Apple Pencil support arrives with iOS 27.2, if stylus input is part of your plan.
And the calendar does not stop: Apple confirmed its “Pro and Tell” event for October 28, where a touchscreen MacBook Pro, M6 Macs, and an OLED iPad mini are expected. Our full October calendar has every date that matters. For a $1,999 first-generation foldable, the smartest move may be watching how today’s software story plays out before committing.
