The iPhone Duo goes on sale this Friday, October 23. If your plan was to stroll into an Apple Store and walk out with Apple’s first foldable, change the plan. According to a MacRumors report picked up by Gadgets360 on October 19, Apple Store staff have been instructed to warn customers visiting on launch day that there will be no iPhone Duo stock for walk-in purchases, and to actively discourage people without pre-orders from showing up expecting to buy one.

It is the predictable ending to a launch that has been defined by scarcity. Pre-orders opened October 16 and sold out in about 30 minutes, with delivery dates for many buyers slipping into November and January 2027. Final assembly yields were only slightly above 60 percent in mid-September because of Apple’s strict quality standards, and the company’s own suppliers have reportedly asked Apple to relax those standards so production can get back on track.

What Apple Stores will actually have on Friday

Stores will not be empty of Duos, they will just be full of Duos you cannot buy. Apple has reportedly planned a big launch-day showcase at its flagship stores, with “spotlight tables” displaying the foldable and demo units showing off the opening and closing action. If you want to handle the phone before committing $1,999, Friday is a fine day to visit. It is just not a day to buy.

Customers who pre-ordered on October 16 and secured an in-store pickup reservation should be fine. Everyone else has been told to check back on October 24 for pickup availability, though with supply this tight, that is a hope, not a promise. These instructions could also change by market, so treat them as the current plan, not a guarantee.

In India, the picture is bleaker: pre-orders placed now will ship only on January 23, 2027, per Gadgets360. Retailers are trying to fill the gap. Croma is promising October 29 shipping, but only for the 256GB model, which is the only configuration it currently has in stock.

The repair bill that dwarfs the $1,999 price

Here is the part of Duo ownership that deserves more attention than the launch-day queue. Apple has published out-of-warranty repair prices for its first foldable, and the folding screen is exactly as expensive to fix as you feared.

RepairWithout AppleCare+With AppleCare+
Inner display$999$99
Other accidental damage$1,499 (maximum)$99
Outer display$379$29
Outer display and back glass$509Varies
Back glass$199$29
Battery service$229Free (below 80% capacity)
Rear camera$229$99
Cover layer over folding display$49$19

The inner display repair alone costs $999, exactly half the $1,999 starting price of the phone. The “other damage” category tops out at $1,499, about 75 percent of what the phone costs. These are US prices from Apple’s own service listings, reported by 9to5Mac and Notebookcheck, and Apple notes that authorized service providers can set their own fees.

AppleCare+ at $199.99 a year: the add-on that pays for itself

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the iPhone Duo costs $19.99 per month, $199.99 per year, or $399 as a one-time payment. Run the math on one bad day: two years paid monthly plus a single inner display repair comes to $578.76, which is $420 less than the $999 repair alone. Paying yearly is cheaper still: two years at $199.99 a year comes to $399.98.

For most $1,199 iPhones, AppleCare+ is a judgment call. For a first-generation foldable with a $999 screen and $1,499 worst-case repairs, it is close to mandatory. Budget the coverage into the purchase price, not as an afterthought.

Your real options if you want one soon

First, if you already pre-ordered, keep your pickup reservation and do not cancel it hoping for a better date. Second, if you missed the pre-order window, the spotlight tables on Friday are worth a visit, if only to confirm the fold feels worth the money before you commit to a months-long wait. Third, check third-party retailers like Croma in India for limited in-stock configurations rather than waiting on Apple’s queue.

And if none of that appeals, there is a respectable fourth option: wait. First-generation foldables from every manufacturer have had teething problems, Apple’s 60 percent yields tell you this one is no exception, and the 2TB model at $3,199 is not getting cheaper while supply is this tight. The Duo will still be there in the spring, probably with better availability and a clearer picture of how the folding display holds up.
