October is shaping up to be Apple’s busiest month in years. The iPhone Duo goes up for pre-order next week, two iOS releases are landing, a new Mac Studio configuration is due, and Bloomberg reports Apple is about to make its biggest push yet into the smart home. Keeping track of it all is a job in itself, so here is the whole month in one place: what is confirmed, what is rumored, and what you should actually do about each date.
Confirmed: the dates Apple has locked in
| Date | What happens | Status |
|---|---|---|
| October 8 (today) | Apple Stores begin installing new product displays (“Do Not Open Until October 8” boxes) | Confirmed via MacRumors |
| October 12 | “Get Ready” for iPhone Duo pre-orders opens: pick color, capacity, carrier, accessories, trade-in | Confirmed by Apple |
| October 16 | iPhone Duo pre-orders begin, 5 a.m. Pacific | Confirmed by Apple |
| October 23 | iPhone Duo launches in stores; iOS 27.1 releases (ships on the Duo) | Confirmed by Apple |
| Late October | iOS 27.2 public release; Mac Studio M5 Ultra with 512GB RAM config | Confirmed by Apple |
The iPhone Duo countdown
The foldable is the center of gravity for the whole month. Pre-orders open October 16, the phone lands October 23, and it starts at $1,999 (or $83.29 a month for 24 months) for 256GB, going up to 2TB. Colors are star white and night sky.
If you want one on day one, the move is to do the “Get Ready” step on October 12, when Apple lets you lock in your color, capacity, carrier status, accessories, AppleCare+ plan, trade-in, and payment details ahead of time. We walked through the whole prep process earlier this month, and with factory yields reportedly at 60%, the early pre-order window may be the only easy one.
On the software side, Apple is racing developers to submit Duo-optimized apps before launch, with an “optimized for iPhone Duo” badge for apps built with Xcode 27.1 and a mandate that all new submissions include Duo screenshots from April 2027. Unoptimized apps will run with black borders on the inner display, so the badge is worth looking for on the apps you care about.
iOS 27.1 and iOS 27.2: what each one brings
This is the slightly confusing part. iOS 27.1 is effectively the iPhone Duo’s operating system: it ships on the foldable and is expected to release just before October 23. Everyone else’s next update is iOS 27.2, due later in the month.
iOS 27.2 is the more interesting release for existing iPhone owners. The beta already shows the redesigned Health app, Siri support in five new languages (French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish), dual capture in Group FaceTime, and Apple TV app profiles on iPhone. If you are on the public beta, you have seen most of this already; everyone else gets it before Halloween.
The rumored trio: smart home hub, HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K
Now the rumors. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports Apple will push into the smart home market on October 13, led by a long-awaited smart home hub (often called HomePad), alongside the first HomePod mini update since 2020 and the first new Apple TV since 2022. We broke down all three devices when the report landed.
Two things are worth noting. First, Gurman’s wording is deliberately vague: October 13 could be the announcement or the launch, and Apple has not confirmed an event. Based on Apple’s October event history, if there is a keynote, the invitation would typically land about a week ahead, which means any day now. Second, the retail evidence is real: Apple Stores worldwide received confidential “Do Not Open Until October 8” boxes this week, verified by MacRumors, and stores begin installing new displays today. Something is being merchandised, even if the announcement timing is still Apple’s secret.
Further out in rumor-land: an iPad mini with an OLED display and MacBook Pro models with OLED displays are also in the mix for October, though neither is confirmed.
What to do if you are buying this month
A month like this rewards patience and punishes impulse buys. If you want the iPhone Duo, do the Get Ready step on October 12 and be at the pre-order page on October 16. If you are eyeing a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K, do not buy the current models now; replacements are likely days away. If an iPad mini or MacBook Pro is on your list, wait until the end of the month before deciding.
And if you are shopping the festive sales in India instead, our iPhone 15 vs 16 vs 17 buying guide is the better read: the Duo’s $1,999 price (roughly Rs 1.76 lakh at current rates, before Indian taxes and duties) puts it in a different universe from the discounts live right now.
We will update this calendar as Apple confirms more dates. October has only just started.
