Apple seeded the first iOS 27.3 developer beta on November 3, one week after iOS 27.2 reached the public, and it is a bigger update than the version number suggests. The redesigned Health app that Apple pulled from the iOS 27.2 beta is back. StandBy features that debuted on the iPhone Duo are spreading to every compatible iPhone. And Duo owners finally get a one-handed mode for the widest phone Apple has ever sold.
The beta, build 24C5037i, is available to registered developers now. A public beta is expected in the coming days, and Apple has said the finished update will reach everyone in December, with mid-December the most likely window. A separate minor update, iOS 27.2.1, is also in testing for bug fixes, but iOS 27.3 is where the new features live.
The Health app Apple pulled is back, with two new tabs
The headline change is the return of the redesigned Health app. Apple previewed it in September and tested it during the iOS 27.2 beta, then removed it before the public release for more polishing. In iOS 27.3 beta 1 it is back, with an Insights tab that turns activity, sleep, and fitness data into personalized summaries and recommendations, and a Longevity tab that looks at health data over time.
The Longevity tab feeds a Health Age estimate, and Apple will offer a $119 laboratory panel from Quest Diagnostics whose results contribute to that estimate. Language support is expanding well beyond English, with Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, and Vietnamese all listed. One catch: the redesigned app requires an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, so older models will not see it even though they can run iOS 27.3.
StandBy stops being a Duo exclusive
StandBy mode, the glanceable display that appears when an iPhone sits on a charger in landscape orientation, is getting its Duo-first features on every iPhone that supports the update, going back to the iPhone 11. Apple has not published a full feature list yet, and beta testers are still cataloguing the additions, but the direction is clear: what started as a foldable perk is becoming a standard iPhone feature.
That matters more than it sounds. The Duo’s wide outer display made StandBy a showcase feature at launch, and bringing the same capabilities to older phones closes one of the software gaps between Apple’s $1,999 foldable and the rest of the lineup. Owners of recent iPhones get the upgrade free, with no hardware purchase required.
One-handed mode arrives on the iPhone Duo
Duo owners get the fix reviewers asked for at launch. When Duo reviews arrived in late October, several noted that the extra-wide outer display was hard to use one-handed. iOS 27.3 beta 1 adds Reachability for the Duo, and it works differently than on other iPhones.
On a normal iPhone, Reachability shifts the screen down. On the Duo, it shifts the screen sideways. Once enabled under Settings, then Accessibility, then Reachability, a short swipe to the side of the screen moves everything left or right so a thumb can reach it. It is a small feature, but for a phone whose width is its defining trait, it addresses the most common everyday complaint.
Safari gets vertical tabs, and China gets Apple Intelligence
Safari is getting a vertical tabs layout across iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, and macOS Golden Gate 27.3, plus an adaptive dark mode, a change aimed at people who keep dozens of tabs open. The beta also carries the first broad deployment of Apple Intelligence on Chinese iPhones, with testing starting November 4 in China.
Chinese users on an iPhone 15 Pro or newer get Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up, Visual Intelligence, notification summaries, and Live Translation through AirPods, with Alibaba’s Qwen model powering parts of Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence. The newer Siri AI features remain unavailable in China for now, a limit Apple confirmed alongside the rollout.
Should you install it now
Unless you are a registered developer, the honest answer is to wait a few days. The developer beta is the earliest, roughest cut, and the public beta that follows it is usually the safer way to try new features early. Either way, back up your iPhone first, because leaving a beta mid-cycle requires wiping and restoring.
For most people, the December public release is the real event. The Health app redesign, wider StandBy, and Duo Reachability are all features that will land on phones people already own, which makes iOS 27.3 one of the more generous point updates in recent years. We covered what to expect from the iOS 27.3 beta before it landed, and the beta confirms the broad strokes while adding the Duo and StandBy details.
