Apple Intelligence Finally Has a Date in China: Testing Starts November 4, With Alibaba’s Qwen Inside Siri

Two years after Apple Intelligence reached iPhones in the United States, it finally has a firm date in China. Apple said on October 31, in a post on its China newsroom, that testing opens on November 4 in the latest iOS developer beta, and the features reach the public with iOS 27.3 in December. The brains behind the smarter Siri there will be Alibaba’s Qwen, not ChatGPT.

This is the official confirmation of a rollout we have been tracking for weeks. Apple executive chairman Tim Cook said during a visit to Shanghai on October 15 that Apple Intelligence had been approved in China and that a test version would arrive later in October. That test slipped by a few weeks, but the December public date held, matching what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on October 14.

What iPhone owners in China actually get

Apple’s post lists 18 features, and they are the first generation of Apple Intelligence, not the newer stuff. The best known are Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone calls, and in person through AirPods; Writing Tools for rewriting, proofreading and summaries; Visual Intelligence, which identifies what the camera sees; and Clean Up, which removes objects from photos.

Qwen enters in two places. Siri can pass some requests to it, including questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations, and Writing Tools gains a Create option that lets Qwen write original text. Users sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple. Alibaba has confirmed that requests sent to Qwen through Apple Intelligence, and the answers it gives, will not be used to train its models, and participation remains opt-in.

Access is limited to users who bought an Apple Intelligence capable iPhone in China, or whose device location and Apple Account country or region are both set to China. The supported phones are the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, every iPhone 16 and later model, the iPhone Air, and the iPhone Duo, with the device and Siri set to English or Simplified Chinese.

What is missing, and why it matters

The exclusions are as important as the inclusions. Apple says plainly that this update does not include Siri AI or the other next generation Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2026. MacRumors adds that Image Playground, Apple’s image generator, is also missing from Apple’s list. That matches Gurman’s earlier reporting, which also linked Baidu to the project, though Apple’s post names only Alibaba.

It is also iPhone only for now. Apple’s post covers iOS, and iPad and Mac support still depends on further approvals. China’s cyberspace regulator registered Apple’s on-device generative AI service for iPhones in July, which cleared the major regulatory hurdle for this launch, but the other platforms are still waiting.

For Chinese iPhone owners, the practical effect is a two tier Apple Intelligence world. Users elsewhere got the rebuilt Siri AI with iOS 27.2, including memory and five new languages. Users in China get the 2024 generation of features, with a local model standing in where other countries can call on ChatGPT. That gap may close in later updates, but Apple has given no date for it.

The dates to keep

November 4 is a developer beta date, not a public launch, and MacRumors notes it likely means November 3 in US time because of the time difference. The public release arrives with iOS 27.3 in December, which also lines up with the first iOS 27.3 beta expected this week. One wording point matters for testers: Apple’s post says “the latest iOS developer beta”, not iOS 27.3 beta 1 specifically, so the exact build that carries the features will only be clear when it ships.

The bigger picture is market access. China is Apple’s second largest market, and Apple Intelligence has been a selling point for new iPhones everywhere else for two years. Closing that gap, even with a first generation feature set, removes one of the longest standing reasons for Chinese buyers to look elsewhere. Whether Qwen inside Siri feels as capable as ChatGPT elsewhere is a question only hands-on testing from November 4 will answer.
