On Friday at 5 a.m. Pacific, Apple opens pre-orders for its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo. It starts at $1,999. The iPhone 18 Pro, on sale since September 18, starts at $1,199. That is an $800 gap between two phones that share the exact same A20 Pro chip.
If you are deciding between them, the honest answer is that this is not really a specs contest. It is a question about what you want a phone to be. Here is every difference that matters, real prices in the US and Canada, and the one question that decides it.
The price gap is real: $800 in the US, $1,250 in Canada
| Storage | iPhone 18 Pro (US) | iPhone Duo (US) |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,199 | $1,999 |
| 512GB | $1,399 | $2,199 |
| 1TB | $1,799 | $2,599 |
| 2TB | $2,399 | $3,199 |
The $800 gap holds at every tier. In Canada the math is steeper: the Duo runs from $2,999 CAD for 256GB to $4,799 CAD for 2TB, while the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,749 CAD. That is a $1,250 difference at the entry tier.
Colors are limited on the foldable: Star White or Night Sky. The 18 Pro gets black, silver, glacier, and the new burgundy. Apple is advertising Duo financing at roughly $83.29 per month for 24 months on the base model, or an Apple Upgrade lease starting around $57.99 per month. The two launch accessories, the iPhone Duo Case at $79 and the Folio with Kickstand at $129, both go on order the same day as the phone.

The takeaway from that table: the chip is the only headline spec they share. Everything else is a tradeoff.
The Duo’s screen is the whole point
The inner 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display is, by Apple’s numbers, 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s screen, with a nano-texture anti-crease coating that Apple is inviting users to hold the company accountable on. Folded shut, the 5.4-inch outer display offers more than 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, so the closed device works as a conventional smartphone.
iOS 27.1 is built for the dual-display architecture, with split-screen multitasking and windowed apps, and Netflix, Zoom, and Slack have already updated for it. Apple Pencil support lands later this year. If your phone is where you read, watch, and work, this is the largest canvas Apple has ever put in a pocket.
Touch ID is back, because Face ID would not fit
The Duo is about 4.5mm thick when open, and that is too thin for the Face ID sensor stack. So Touch ID lives in the power button, with Apple Watch unlock as backup. After years of Face ID-only flagships, the fingerprint reader is back by necessity, not nostalgia.
The Duo is also the first iPhone with no physical SIM tray in any market worldwide. US buyers will barely notice, since every major carrier supports eSIM. International buyers should confirm their carrier supports eSIM before ordering, because coverage varies by carrier and country.
Battery: two phones in one rating
Apple rates the Duo at up to 44 hours of video playback on the cover screen and 31 hours on the inner display, against 36 hours for the 18 Pro. The big screen costs endurance: unfold the phone and you get less battery than the cheaper slab, keep it closed and you get more. Your mileage will depend entirely on how often you open it.
The one question that decides it
Do you want the best camera phone Apple makes, or a tablet that folds into a phone?
If photography is the priority, the iPhone 18 Pro wins clearly. Its 48MP Fusion main camera has a true variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4, with manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, focus, and a histogram, plus a 4x telephoto with an 8x optical-quality mode. Apple is marketing the Duo around its folding form factor and the new shooting angles it enables, not headline camera specs, so camera-first buyers should not pay the $800 premium hoping for better photos.
If screen real estate is the priority, nothing else Apple sells comes close. The Duo is 67 percent more expensive at the base tier, and that money buys the fold, the bigger canvas, the titanium frame, and early-adopter status, not more performance. The chip is identical.
Who should buy which
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if you want the best camera Apple makes, you want Face ID, you want the most phone per dollar, or you are upgrading from an iPhone 17 Pro or an older slab. It is also the safer buy if your carrier’s eSIM support is uncertain.
Buy the iPhone Duo if you want the biggest iPhone screen ever in your pocket, you genuinely multitask on your phone, you are comfortable paying early-adopter money, and your carrier supports eSIM. Complete Apple’s Get Ready process before Friday morning: it does not reserve inventory, but with supply expected to be tight, it shortens checkout to a couple of taps.
Wait if you are on the fence. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects only 7 to 8 million Duo units to ship in 2026, well below iPhone 18 Pro volumes, so early stock will be thin and resellers will charge premiums. The first wave lands October 23 in more than 70 countries including the US, Canada, the UK, China, Japan, and India, with 28 more markets on October 30. Waiting for the first reviews costs you nothing.
