A year ago, the iPhone 17 Pro arrived with the A19 Pro chip and a redesigned look. This September, Apple shipped the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 for 256GB, a hundred dollars more than the 17 Pro’s $1,099 launch price. The question everyone is asking: did anything change that you would notice?

Short answer: almost everything that changed is inside. Same 6.3-inch screen, same body dimensions down to the tenth of a millimeter. But the chip, the camera, the charging, and the storage ceiling all moved. Here is the full picture, with a clear verdict at the end.

The A20 Pro is a genuine generational jump in silicon

The A20 Pro is Apple’s first iPhone chip built on a 2-nanometer process, where smaller transistors let more of them fit in the same space for speed and efficiency. Apple claims up to 20% faster CPU and 40% faster graphics, with one extra GPU core over the A19 Pro.

The more interesting number is the second 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says AI processing performance has doubled, which matters as on-device Apple Intelligence workloads grow. The redesigned vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the old one, enabling up to 40% better sustained performance, which means the chip can hold peak speeds longer before heat throttles it. If you play demanding games or edit video on your phone, that sustained-performance figure matters more than the peak benchmarks.

The variable-aperture camera is the headline feature

This is the single biggest hardware change. The 48MP main camera now has a physical variable aperture that switches between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0, replacing the fixed f/1.78 aperture on the 17 Pro. Mechanical aperture control on a phone is something Android flagships flirted with and largely abandoned; Apple shipping it on the main iPhone camera is a genuine first for the platform.

Practically, it means brighter shots with more background blur at f/1.48 and sharper, deeper-focus shots at f/4.0, all with about 50% better low-light performance by Apple’s numbers. Apple also added manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, a live histogram, Photographic Styles 3 with texture and grain controls, and a feature called Apple Reference Image for creating authenticated, unalterable reference photos. Cinematic effects can now be applied after capture to video shot at up to 60 fps.

If you want to squeeze the most out of either camera, our guide on iPhone 18 Pro camera settings for sharper, cleaner photos covers the settings that matter most.

Battery and charging moved forward; everything else stayed

Video playback goes from 33 to 36 hours, a real but modest gain, and wired charging now hits 50% in about 15 minutes with a 60W adapter, down from 20 minutes. If you rely on quick top-ups during the day, the charging jump is one of the most noticeable day-to-day changes here.

MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging stay capped at 25W. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Face ID, USB-C, Crash Detection, and Emergency SOS are all unchanged. The Dynamic Island got smaller because a new infrared sensor now hides under the screen, and it can show up to three Live Activities at once instead of two.

Storage is the quiet price-story: the 18 Pro tops out at 2TB while the 17 Pro stopped at 1TB. That matters because the higher storage tiers got more expensive: 1TB is now $1,799, up from $1,499, per launch pricing reports.

The Indian price question

The iPhone 17 Pro started at ₹1,34,900 in India at launch. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the US, $100 more than the 17 Pro’s $1,099. Check Apple’s India store for the exact rupee pricing in your region, because the premium may land differently once taxes and import costs are folded in, and early reports suggest India is not seeing the same entry-level increase as the US.

Should you upgrade?

From an iPhone 17 Pro: probably not. This is a refinement year, not a redesign year. The variable aperture and the 2nm chip are real upgrades, but $1,199 for an incremental jump after one generation is a hard sell. Engadget’s case for staying put is worth reading.

From an iPhone 16 Pro or older: yes, the 18 Pro is the better buy. You skip a generation of incremental gains, land on the first 2nm iPhone chip, the first variable-aperture iPhone camera, faster charging, and double the max storage. That is a proper two-generation leap.

If you already own the 18 Pro: check the launch issues first. Early units have reported pink halos around the camera lenses that no software update can fix, and a separate AT&T cellular bug is pushing Apple to replace affected Pro Max units outright. If yours is fine, you already have this year’s phone.

One more way to think about it: the iPhone 18 Pro is for photographers and anyone who pushes their phone hard enough to heat it up. Everyone else on a 17 Pro can sit this year out.
