Apple has started nudging the holdouts. iPhones still running iOS 26 now see iOS 27.0.1 as the prominent software update in Settings, with iOS 26.7.1 moved down to a smaller “Also Available” section. Apple is not forcing anyone to upgrade, but the message is clear: it is time to move.
iOS 27 has been out since September 14, and the current 27.0.1 release fixes several real bugs, including a Face ID restart issue and a touchscreen freeze. If you have been putting it off, here is how to update safely, step by step.
Before you tap Update: the 5-minute prep checklist
Major iOS updates are reliable, but a little prep removes the small risks that cause most update headaches.
- Back up your iPhone. Go to Settings, tap your name at the top, then iCloud, then iCloud Backup, and tap Back Up Now. Wait for it to finish. If you prefer a computer, plug into a Mac or PC and back up through Finder or the Apple Devices app. A fresh backup means any update problem is an inconvenience, not a disaster.
- Free up storage space. iOS updates need several gigabytes of free space to download and unpack. Check yours at Settings, General, iPhone Storage. If you are tight on space, our guide to freeing iPhone storage without deleting a single photo walks through the biggest wins.
- Charge up and connect to Wi-Fi. Plug in or make sure you have at least 50 percent battery, and use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data. The download is large, and an interrupted install is the most common cause of a stuck update.
- Update your important apps first. Open the App Store, tap your profile picture, and install pending app updates. Banking, work, and authenticator apps occasionally need their own updates to behave on a new iOS.
How to install iOS 27.0.1 from iOS 26
- Open Settings, then General, then Software Update.
- You will see iOS 27.0.1 at the top as the recommended update. If you would rather stay on iOS 26 for now, look under Also Available at the bottom, where iOS 26.7.1 sits with the latest security fixes.
- Tap Download and Install under iOS 27.0.1, enter your passcode, and agree to the terms.
- The iPhone downloads the update, verifies it, and restarts. You will see the Apple logo with a progress bar. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi and plugged in until it boots back to the lock screen, then finish the short on-screen setup.
The whole process usually takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on your connection. If Apple’s servers are busy right after a prompt change like this one, the download may be slow; starting it in the evening is fine.
What you actually get in iOS 27
iOS 27 is Apple’s biggest iPhone software update of the year, headlined by more advanced Siri AI capabilities with deeper on-device context and cross-app actions. The 27.0.1 point release then fixed the early bugs that matter most in daily use:
- Unexpected restarts when Face ID failed to authenticate
- A color artifact appearing on photos shot at 2x zoom under certain lighting
- The touchscreen going unresponsive when Notification Center and Control Center were opened at the same time
- Protection going forward for the iPhone 18 Pro Max cellular issue on AT&T, though phones already affected still need replacement, as we covered earlier
Looking ahead, the iOS 27.2 beta adds a redesigned Health app and Siri in five new languages, which we detailed this week, so updating now keeps you on the path to those features.
If the update stalls, fails, or will not download
First, check the obvious: enough free storage, a stable Wi-Fi connection, and sufficient battery. If the download hangs, restart the iPhone and try again; a surprising number of stuck updates clear on a reboot.
If Software Update keeps failing, update through a computer instead. Connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC, open Finder or the Apple Devices app, select the iPhone, and click Check for Update. The computer route downloads the full installer and is the most reliable fallback when the on-device updater misbehaves.
One more note: do not interrupt the phone while the Apple logo and progress bar are showing. That phase is the actual install, and pulling power mid-install is how phones end up in recovery mode.
Should you update, or stay on iOS 26.7.1?
For most people, update. iOS 27.0.1 carries the latest security fixes plus the bug fixes above, and Apple has clearly decided it is the version everyone should be on.
The case for waiting is narrow: if you depend on a specific app for work and its developer has not confirmed iOS 27 compatibility, or you use configuration profiles from an employer that have not been reissued, give it another week or two and check the app’s release notes. Apple has not shared iOS 27 adoption numbers yet, so there is no crowd data to lean on, but the 26.7.1 “Also Available” option exists precisely for cautious updaters.
Either way, do not stay on an older iOS 26 release indefinitely. Even Apple recommends installing at least iOS 26.7.1 to keep receiving security fixes, and an unpatched phone is the one thing worse than an update you were not excited about.
