For the first time, buying a foldable phone means choosing between Apple and Samsung, and the timing could not be more awkward for Apple. The iPhone Duo opens pre-orders on October 16 at $1,999. This week, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 fell to $1,549 in Prime Day sales, a record low that puts $450 between the two phones. That gap buys a lot of argument.
Here is how they compare on the numbers we actually know, and where Apple is still keeping quiet.

Yes, half the Duo column reads “not yet disclosed.” Apple has confirmed the price, colors, storage tiers, and dates, but almost nothing about the hardware inside. Samsung, eight generations into foldables, publishes everything down to the hinge metallurgy. If you are deciding before October 16, you are deciding on trust in Apple’s silicon and camera teams, not on a spec sheet.
Displays: Samsung’s passport-style screen against Apple’s mystery panel
The Fold 8’s big change this year is its shape: a wider, shorter “passport” design with a 7.6-inch inner display at roughly 4:3, the aspect ratio that actually suits reading and split-screen work, plus a 5.5-inch cover screen that finally feels like a normal phone. At 201g it is also the lightest book-style foldable Samsung has made, lighter than some conventional slab phones.
Apple has said nothing about the Duo’s displays. But the company is pushing developers hard: Xcode 27.1 adds Duo development support, Apple is already accepting Duo-optimized app submissions, and a new “Optimized” badge will mark apps tuned for the foldable ahead of a 2027 mandate. That is a strong signal Apple cares about the unfolded experience, even if it will not show us the panel yet.
Cameras and performance: a known quantity against a known team
The Fold 8 carries two 50MP cameras, wide and ultrawide, with no dedicated telephoto, a deliberate trade for the thinner body. It runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, the fastest Android silicon shipping this year.
Apple’s camera and chip teams are the best argument for the Duo. Whatever Apple puts in a $1,999 phone will be its top silicon and a flagship camera system. The question is whether a first-generation effort matches a device Samsung has iterated eight times. On AI features, both lean on their assistants: Galaxy AI on Android 17 for Samsung, Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 for Apple.
Battery, durability, and the water question
The Fold 8’s 4,800mAh silicon-carbon battery with 45W charging, 63 percent in 30 minutes, is a known, decent quantity for a foldable. Its IP48 rating handles splashes and dust particles larger than 1mm. If full submersion protection tops your list, Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries IP68 at the same $1,899, with an 8-inch inner display and Tensor G6, and it is worth a look as the third option in this fight.
Apple has published no Duo battery or durability figures. First-generation Apple hardware in a brand-new category deserves a wait-for-reviews asterisk, and foldables are the category where first generations have historically creaked, literally.
The $450 question: who should buy which
Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if you want a foldable now, with known specs, seven years of updates, and $450 staying in your pocket at Prime Day pricing. At $1,549 it is the rational purchase, and the passport redesign fixes the narrow-cover-screen complaint that dogged earlier Folds.
Buy the iPhone Duo if you live in Apple’s ecosystem and want the first foldable iPhone, and you are comfortable pre-ordering hardware Apple has not fully specified. The $1,999 price sits $100 above the Fold 8’s list price, a smaller gap than the Prime Day math suggests, and iPhones hold resale value better than any Android phone, which softens the premium on the way out. If you are torn between the Duo and a conventional iPhone instead, our Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max breakdown covers the $700 question.
Either way, do not walk into October 16 unprepared. Apple’s “Get Ready” process opens October 12 on the iPhone Duo page, letting you pick color, capacity, carrier, trade-in, and payment ahead of the 5 a.m. PT pre-order rush. With factory yields reportedly tight, the early slots may not last the day.
