Apple’s first foldable iPhone is twelve days from pre-orders, and if you want one on launch day, the clock is already ticking. Apple has confirmed that its “Get Ready” pre-order process for the iPhone Duo opens Monday, October 12, four days before orders go live. With supply expected to be tight, those four days might be the difference between an October 23 delivery and a long wait.

This is not a reservation, and it does not guarantee you a phone. But if demand outstrips supply the way analysts expect, shaving minutes off your checkout could matter. Here is the full timeline and how to prepare.

The dates that matter

DateWhat happens
October 12“Get Ready” window opens: lock in color, storage, carrier, payment, AppleCare+, trade-in, and addresses
October 15Get Ready window closes (expected late in the day)
October 16, 8:00 AM ET / 5:00 AM PT (5:30 PM IST)Pre-orders open; one-tap checkout for those who prepared
October 23iPhone Duo hits stores and doorsteps in the first wave of 70+ countries
October 30Availability expands to another 28 countries and regions

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 unlocked for the 256GB model (Apple also quotes $83.29 per month for 24 months). Storage steps up through 512GB and 1TB to 2TB. Colors are star white and night sky. For Indian readers, that works out to roughly Rs 1,76,000 at current rates before taxes, though Apple has not announced India pricing yet.

How to get ready, step by step

Apple’s own product page tells shoppers to “come back on 10.12 to get ready for pre-order.” From that date, you can open the Apple Store app or Apple’s online store and make every decision in advance:

  1. Pick your configuration: color and storage. If you are torn between capacities, decide now. Second-guessing on launch morning costs minutes you may not have.
  2. Confirm your carrier status: new line, upgrade, or unlocked. Make sure your account login works and your ID details are current.
  3. Add your payment method and addresses: the most common checkout failure on launch day is a card that needs re-verification. Do it on October 12, not October 16.
  4. Arrange your trade-in: get the quote now so it applies to your order immediately.
  5. Choose AppleCare+ and accessories: one less screen to scroll through at 5 AM.

When pre-orders open, prepared shoppers check out in a single tap. Reddit has already turned the idea into a joke, “getting ready to preorder my preorder,” but the humor misses the point: when stock is genuinely limited, admin is strategy.

Why supply could be the real story

The case for preparing early is not hype, it is math. Jiemian News, citing a source close to Foxconn’s supply chain, reported that finished-device assembly yields for the Duo were only slightly above 60% as of September 17, meaning roughly four in ten units built at that point did not meet Apple’s quality bar and had to be reworked or scrapped. The source said it could take six months to a year for the line to reach mature yields under Apple’s current standards.

The problems extend beyond final assembly. Samsung Display’s foldable OLED panels and the hinge’s components reportedly suffered low yields, delayed deliveries, and design changes during the ramp. Apple tested Liquid Metal for some hinge parts before reassessing the approach, and the hinge alone contains more than 100 components with a 3D-printed cover.

Analyst estimates point to somewhere between five and eight million units in 2026, analyst Jeff Pu initially forecast around seven million iPhone Duo shipments in the second half of 2026 before cutting his estimate to six million over hinge constraints, while TrendForce estimates about five million, or nearly a quarter of the global foldable market. Compare that with a typical 20 to 30 million units per full product cycle for an individual iPhone Pro or Pro Max model, and the picture is clear: a $1,999 foldable could sell out its first batches fast.

Apple, for its part, has pushed back gently on the shortage narrative, noting that launching “immediately in nearly 100 countries and regions” is not the move of a company expecting supply to collapse. But broad availability and launch-week availability are two different things.

The practical take

If you know you want the Duo, spend 15 minutes on October 12 doing the admin. It is free, it takes no commitment, and it turns the most stressful part of launch day into a single tap. If you are on the fence, consider whether you want to be deciding at launch-week prices: we compared what the Duo’s premium buys against the iPhone 18 Pro Max in our earlier breakdown.

The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, Apple’s first release tuned for the foldable form factor, and if you end up with the regular iPhone 18 instead, our iOS 27 settings guide is worth your time either way. Apple also has a busy October beyond phones, with a smart home launch expected on October 13, so the Duo is only the start of your buying decisions this month.
