Rockstar Games has settled the two questions every GTA 6 buyer has been asking: when can you download it, and how much space do you need. The answers, confirmed on November 3, are November 10 and up to 212GB. If you own a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X or S and you pre-ordered the game, the homework starts now, not on launch night.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The digital pre-load opens nine days earlier, on Tuesday, November 10, but the start time depends on your console. On PS5, pre-loading begins at midnight local time in each player’s time zone, so New Zealand players start first. On Xbox Series X|S, there is a single worldwide start time: midnight GMT on November 10, which is 4pm Pacific and 7pm Eastern on November 9.
212GB, and why the earlier 210GB figure was wrong
Rockstar lists the pre-load file at up to 212GB depending on the device, and Sony’s own launch-preparation guide is blunter: PS5 owners should clear a minimum of 212GB before the pre-download begins. Treat that as the number to plan around rather than an identical download size for every version.
The official figure corrects a leak that circulated in late October, when a PlayStation Store tracking account put the download at 210GB with a November 12 pre-load date. Rockstar moved the date two days earlier and added 2GB to the size. It is also worth noting what the 212GB figure is: the space the game needs on the console, which may not be exactly the download size if the download is compressed. Nobody has officially confirmed whether the PS5 Pro needs a different amount, how much extra room the console needs during installation, or whether a day-one patch will add more gigabytes on top. Leaving a buffer of a few dozen gigabytes above 212GB is the safer move.
What 212GB means on each console
On an original 825GB PS5, the game takes up roughly a third of the usable storage, according to estimates from Push Square and TweakTown. A 1TB PS5 Slim offers about 822GB of usable space, so GTA 6 still eats roughly a quarter of the drive. The squeeze is worst on the 512GB Xbox Series S, where 212GB is more than half of the space you can actually use, before any other game is installed.
| Console | Usable storage (approx.) | Share taken by GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 (825GB) | ~667GB | About a third |
| PS5 Slim (1TB) | ~822GB | About a quarter |
| Xbox Series X (1TB) | ~802GB | About a quarter |
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | ~364GB | More than half |
For comparison, GTA V needs about 148GB on the PlayStation Store, and Red Dead Redemption 2 is roughly half the size of GTA 6. This is the biggest Rockstar install ever, and it arrives at a moment when storage upgrades are not cheap: a 1TB or 2TB NVMe expansion for PS5, or a Seagate expansion card for Xbox, is the real hidden cost of launch week for players with full drives.
How long the download takes at your internet speed
212GB is 1,696 gigabits, so the download time depends entirely on your connection, and these are best-case estimates at full sustained speed. Real-world speeds, network congestion and other devices on your network will stretch them.
| Connection speed | Estimated download time |
|---|---|
| 100 Mbps | About 4 hours 45 minutes |
| 300 Mbps | About 1 hour 35 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | About 55 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | About 30 minutes |
That is the whole point of the nine-day pre-load window. Start it on November 10 and the game is ready the moment it unlocks on November 19. Wait until launch day and a 100 Mbps connection means an evening lost to a progress bar.
Pre-load checklist before November 10
First, confirm you actually have a digital pre-order. Pre-loading is reserved for players who pre-ordered; it is not open to everyone, and the game cannot be played before November 19 even once it is installed. The Standard Edition is listed at $79.99 on the PlayStation Store.
Second, clear the space now. On PS5, go to Settings, Storage, and check what is actually free; delete or move games you are not playing to an external USB drive or a compatible internal SSD expansion. On Xbox, use Settings, System, Storage to see the same picture. Third, if you are buying physical, note that code-in-box copies reach retailers from November 12, two days after the digital pre-load starts, so physical buyers redeem later and still face the same 212GB download.
Finally, set the console to download automatically and leave it in rest mode overnight on November 9 or 10, depending on your platform’s start time. There is no PC release date in this announcement, so PC players are still waiting for their own timeline. For console players, the plan is simple: free up 212GB, start the download on November 10, and spend launch day playing instead of watching a progress bar.
