Apple Raised iPhone Duo Production 30% Before Pre-Orders Opened: What That Says About Demand for the $1,999 Foldable

Apple has reportedly increased its supply chain orders for the iPhone Duo by about 30 percent, according to a report from China’s Securities Times, just days before pre-orders open for its first foldable on October 16.

The numbers tell the story. Initial estimates had Apple producing between 6 million and 7 million iPhone Duo units for the rest of 2026. With the increase, total output could approach 10 million units before the year ends, though it is still expected to land just under that mark. For a first-generation foldable that starts at $1,999, that is an unusually aggressive bet.

The demand signal, in context

The production bump is especially notable because it lands just a week after a very different headline. On October 9, Nikkei reported that Apple was cutting iPhone 18 Pro orders on soft demand. Now the company is doing the opposite for its most expensive phone ever. The message is hard to miss: the excitement is in the foldable, not the familiar slab. (Read our coverage of the iPhone 18 Pro order cuts.)

It also lines up with what observers are seeing. Nothing CEO Carl Pei publicly called the iPhone Duo a “waste of money” this week, arguing it lacks features buyers expect. Apple’s answer was not a statement, it was a bigger order book. Demand from early adopters, the company seems to believe, does not care what is missing.

Why foldables, why now

Samsung has sold folding phones for the better part of a decade, but the category never broke past early adopters. Apple’s entry changes the math: 10 million units would be the biggest single foldable production run in a year from any brand, and it comes from a company that historically enters categories late and ships at scale. The supply chain numbers suggest Apple expects the Duo to do for foldables what the iPhone did for touchscreens, create the mass market it then dominates.

What we know about the launch

Pre-orders open October 16, with general availability on October 23 across more than 70 countries and regions, followed by a second rollout wave on October 30. The Duo carries a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, according to Counterpoint Research figures cited in supply chain coverage.

Apple is also leaning into the in-store experience. More than 100 demo units are reportedly headed to flagship stores, including the Fifth Avenue location in New York, and retail staff will be able to customize the “Hello” boot screen with the buyer’s name, a small theatrical touch aimed at launch-day crowds.

What this means if you want one

A 30 percent production increase sounds like good news for availability, but read it carefully. Apple is raising output because it expects demand to outrun its original plan, and even the revised target of nearly 10 million units is modest next to the tens of millions of regular iPhones Apple ships in a quarter. Launch-day stock will still be the bottleneck.

The practical takeaway is simple. If you want an iPhone Duo at launch, do not wait for reviews to trickle in. Pre-order on October 16, and have your trade-in, carrier plan, and Apple ID ready before the page goes live. Our pre-order checklist walks through the setup steps that take the longest.

And if you are torn between the foldable and the familiar, the price gap is real but narrower than it looks once trade-in enters the picture. Our iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone Duo comparison breaks down what the extra $800 actually buys.

One more thing the raised target hints at: Apple nearly delayed the Duo into November to build up stock, as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported earlier this week. That inventory build-up is already done, and the 30 percent bump suggests the launch date held and the factories are confident.
