Dust and dirt is all around us. It is in the air and on the ground. Dust also settles on virtually every surface. One of the worst places for dirt to collect and build up is in your carpet. As we walk across the carpet, dirt is transferred from our feet. Also skin particles that we naturally shed. Most of us have a pet of some sort and they will bring in dirt or shed hair onto your carpets.
To clean carpets you can sweep them but this is hard work. A rug can be taken outside and be beaten but again this is not a fun task. The easiest and most labour saving is with a vacuum cleaner.
Vacuum cleaner bags, also known as dust bags are an item that is contained in the domestic vacuum cleaner. The objective of the vacuum bag is to collect and trap dust particles that are collected through the vacuum cleaner. The bag can then be easily removed for disposal.
Vacuum bags are manufactured from various materials. Usually they are made from paper or a cloth type material. Paper bags are convenient because you can easily dispose of the item and replace it with a new one. A cloth bag can be washed and reused, which although it is a good way of saving money, can be inconvenient and time consuming. The most popular type of dust bag is the paper variety.
When a vacuum draws air, the dust bag is designed to allow some air to escape through tiny holes in the bag. This is essential for the cleaner to function properly. Obviously because of this, some of the extra fine particles of dust will escape through these holes. This is why most vacuums are also fitted with extra filters. These filters are designed to catch the microscopic particles that the dust bags lets through. Filters will need periodic cleaning and eventually replacement.
Regular cleaning and renewing of your vacuum’s dust bags and filters will make your cleaner more efficient. The more efficient it is then the cleaner your carpets will be.
To help further with removing dust and dirt from carpets a lot of vacuum cleaners have a brush fitted underneath. The brush revolves at high speed and flicks debris up into the vacuum cleaner. The brush is also known as an agitator. One end of a rubber belt is attached to a motor and the other end is attached to the brush. This belt is known as the agitator belt. Over time, agitator belts stretch and eventually break. This is another item that needs periodic replacement.
Dust bags, filters and belts are made and supplied by the same manufactures that make the vacuum cleaners. A cheaper option is to buy the replacement parts from a third party manufacturer. The quality of the parts from a third party manufacturer have just the same quality as the originals but are often only half the cost.
If you clean your vacuum cleaner filters regularly and do not overfill your dust bags then it will help prolong the life of your cleaner.
