Car insurance has always been complicated and has been known to be tricky when it comes to things like coverage and comprehensive policies. The same goes for motorcycle insurance. It’s just as tricky and just as complicated. Getting motorcycle insurance is as important to the rider as it is for a car driver to get car insurance. There are some factors to consider when purchasing insurance but there are even more factors to think about when purchasing motorcycle insurance. Here are a few differences:

  1. Not just an option. Unlike car insurance wherein there are instances when insurance is not needed, motorcycle insurance is mandatory and needed even before you get on a bike. You can drive as a student and even drive with a license on a car but with motorcycles, you must have insurance first before getting on a motorcycle. On this, there are no exceptions.
  2. Various two wheeled vehicles. Motorcycle insurance differs from car insurance because it covers a variety of two wheeled vehicles. Ranging from mopeds to high powered sport motorcycles, motorcycle insurance change depending on the bike that you own. The coverages for the different types of bikes are very different because of the speed and power that each type of motorcycles has.
  3. Accessorize your bike. Unlike cars, insurance companies usually offer coverage for accessories for motorcycle such as helmets and backrests. Insurance companies, however, do not cover accessories for cars unless they are part of the car itself. This is a big difference because it places a premium for riders to purchase helmets and having these accessories because it can affect the rate of their motorcycle insurance.
  4. Custom made coverage. Cars with custom made changes and performance upgrades can increase the insurance rating for that vehicle. With motorcycles though, most insurance companies do not insure custom made motorcycles at all. The reason for this is that there are enough risks with motorcycle driving and having modifications of custom changes drastically increases these risks.
  5. Switch hitting with motorcycles. Unlike cars, wherein you can just change your car and apply the same insurance to that vehicle, changing bikes requires you to undergo a little training. Any biker will tell you that changing bikes can be very disorientating for the rider. Getting on an unfamiliar bike is very tricky and most riders have to train for a little bit to get the hang of it.
