Louisiana does have minimum requirements for auto insurance liability coverages. These are the minimums to satisfy the law, but you may want to increase them for added financial protection. These minimums for Bodily Injury and Property Damage are:
Bodily Injury: Minimum of $10,000 per person and $20,000 for two or more persons injured in an accident.
Property Damage: Minimum of $10,000 per accident.
Of course the higher your limits the more you premium will be, but there are ways you can save.
One of the most important things you can do is to spend time shopping around and getting some comparison quotes. Since rates do vary, this could save you hundreds of dollars a year. It’s recommended that you get at least three or more quotes. Be sure to provide the same information about the amount of your deductibles and coverages, plus other factors such as how many miles you drive annually.
One of the easiest ways to get your quotes is on the Web. You can go to individual insurance company Web sites and request a quote from each, or visit a comparison site that allows you to enter your information once, then provides several quotes back.
Other ways you can save:
Ask about discounts. Discounts are common among Louisiana car insurance companies, but you want to make sure you are aware of them as you could save five percent or more on your premium. Common discounts include saving when you insure your car and home (or get renters insurance) with the same company, have anti-lock brakes, get good grades (for students) and are a senior driver.
Drive less. Many insurance companies will give you a lower rate if you drive fewer miles in a year because you are at a lower risk of getting in a collision.
Increase your deductibles. A higher deductible can lower your premium quite a bit. You just want to be sure you can come up with the deductible in the event of a claim.
Keep your credit in good standing. Often, car insurance companies will give a lower rate to someone with a good credit score.
