Four Surprisingly Simple Alternatives to Auto Repair

Auto repair can be an unforeseen expense that some drivers prefer to avoid. Since many Americans live from paycheck to paycheck, there aren’t always enough funds available to address every mechanical issue as it arises. Some people can set aside enough money in savings to easily pay unexpected bills, but it’s worth considering the alternatives.

1. Ignore the problem.

Some mechanical problems (like a thrown rod) can be catastrophic, leaving no choice but to hire a tow truck. Other issues, like a check engine light, tend to be less dire. While no problem should be completely “ignored,” a check engine light can be evaluated for free at many auto parts stores. If the error code is something minor like a bad O2 sensor, they can often reset the check engine light for you, allowing you to wait and see if the problem happens again. Many drivers judge that some check engine codes are not worth the expense of going immediately to a mechanic. However, if there’s a knocking sound from the engine or something else similarly ominous, it’s worth getting the problem evaluated by an auto repair technician. Depending on the diagnosis, the technician may approve of your choice to proceed with driving as usual until further symptoms develop.

2. Get a horse.

Sure, it’s thinking outside of the box, but getting a horse for your daily commute could make you feel more connected to your local environment. Horses aren’t appropriate for all Americans, particularly those who live in urban areas. They also take a lot of time to learn how to maintain and cannot be simply neglected like vehicles. Horses are more expensive than many cars in the long run, but they also tend to be more beautiful than cars and more capable of returning your affection.

3. Ride a bike.

Far less expensive and time-consuming than a horse, a bicycle allows you to get outside and commute without subjecting your car to wear and tear. What’s more, riding a bicycle allows you to get exercise. While anyone can learn to change the oil and perform simple auto repair tasks, bike maintenance is much easier to learn.

4. Use public transportation.

Buses, ferries, and subways are often unused by a large fraction of local populations. The result is that roads are often crowded with cars carrying only one or two people. Those who use public transportation help ease urban congestion, improving the efficiency of the city in which they live. Some cities also connect commuters with ride share programs, allowing people to find other drivers with similar commutes. Travel between different cities and states can be more complex without a personal vehicle. However, buses and trains are available in most parts of the country.

Ultimately, most drivers choose to visit an auto repair shop as soon as they can afford the expense. Not every alternative mentioned here would work for everyone. However, a person who works in a Wild West themed saloon on the edge of town may find an equine option surprisingly feasible.
