Like other abbreviations, the term SRS can refer to many things. While in automotive scene, SRS refers to Supplement Restraint System which provides supplement protection for auto users if any auto collision occurs.
Seat belts were the main components of SRS for car occupants 30 years ago. Fast-developing auto technology has introduced another kind of innovative inner protective device-the airbag, which has a more effective effect in guaranteeing car users’ safety in car crashes. Airbags are generally deployed on steering wheels. Wheels with an airbag look no different from other normal wheels; however, once a frontal collision takes place, the air bag will immediately inflate so as to prevent the driver’s head and chest from striking into the wheel or dashboard.
Survey shows that the death rates of drivers of big sedans, medium sedans and coupes have been reduced by 30%, 11% and 14% respectively since the airbag started its using on automobiles. Some vehicles contain multiple airbags in various side and frontal locations of the passenger seating positions, which provide extra protection of passengers as well. One thing that may be overlooked is that airbags can only function well in the premise that people have seat belts tied on their body.
Advanced intelligent airbags are also adopted in some high-end vehicles. These bags coming with electronic sensor are usually mounted on car seats. The sensor will detect whether the seat occupant is adult or kid and his seating height, thus to control the airbag’s inflating extent by collecting such stats. This will protect seat occupant more efficiently.
