While the list of problems with used cars can go on and on, below is a list of the most common problems that you should look out for when shopping for used cars in any state or city.
Dirty Engine
Before purchasing the car, be sure to check the oil of the car. The oil should be filled up to the top of the marker on the dipstick. The color of the oil should be golden brown or just a little lighter. If the oil turns out to be black or very dark, this means that the car has a very dirty engine. A dirty engine will use up the oil much faster, thus requiring more frequent trips to the mechanic for maintenance work.
Overheating
Always look for signs of the engine overheating. You are welcome to ask the dealer if the car has a history of overheating but they are most likely not going to be truthful about it. The best way to figure out if the engine is prone to overheating is to open the radiator cap. Bear in mind that the radiator cap should only be opened when the engine is completely cold.
Once the radiator cap is open, look at the coolant. It should be filled up to the brim and be free of any grease, debris, oil or any other irregularities. If the coolant escapes the sealed system, then it means that there is a leak somewhere in the radiator. This can cause the coolant to leak and burn up over a hot engine. Over time, the burned coolant will accumulate over the engine, damage its life, and cause it to overheat.
Rust
Always remember to check the car frame for rust. Rust on the body and surface of the car can be dealt with easily. However, extensive rusting or rotting can cause the frame to become weak and unsafe to drive. Remember to check the floor pan where the driver sits as this area is prone to rusting very quickly. This is because the steel is exposed to a lot of water and salt from the driver’s shoes.
