Samsung’s $2,850 W27 Is the Most Expensive Foldable You Can Buy, and It Is Only Sold in China

Samsung’s $2,850 W27 Is the Most Expensive Foldable You Can Buy, and It Is Only Sold in China

Samsung has a new foldable that costs more than any iPhone, and you cannot buy it outside China. The Galaxy W27 launched on October 29 at Samsung’s “Heart of the World” event, a China exclusive luxury version of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and it goes on sale on November 13. The starting price is CNY 18,999, about $2,852 or roughly Rs 2,72,000.

The W series is a long running Samsung tradition: take the flagship foldable, dress it up, add business friendly extras, and sell it only in China in partnership with China Telecom. The W27 follows that script closely. What is new this year is the price, which pushes past even Apple’s most expensive phone, and the timing, which lands weeks after Apple’s iPhone Duo started drawing complaints about its inner display.

What the money buys

Under the gold accents, the W27 is the Fold 8 Ultra’s hardware. It has an 8-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display, a 6.5-inch cover screen, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, a 200MP main camera, and a 5,000mAh battery, running Android 17 with One UI 9. Both configurations come with 16GB of RAM, and buyers choose between 512GB and 1TB of storage. Reported weight is 215g, and it folds to 8.9mm thick.

The differences from the standard model are mostly cosmetic and commercial: a two tone design with gold accents in two colors, Jihu Blue and Jixia Hong, a mandatory high storage configuration, bundled accessories, and Tiantong satellite calling support with a one year package that includes 300 minutes of calls and 100 SMS messages. Reservations opened on October 29 through Samsung’s China store.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra$2,099$2,700 for 1TB (US)Global
Apple iPhone Duo$1,999Up to $3,199Global

The premium is the point, and also the problem

Do the math and the W27’s luxury markup is plain. The 1TB W27 converts to roughly $3,300, about $600 more than the same storage tier of the Fold 8 Ultra in the US. Samsung has not published a China price for the standard Fold 8 Ultra at matching configurations, so the exact same market premium is unconfirmed, but the direction is clear: buyers pay a large sum for exclusivity, the finish, and the satellite package, not for faster hardware.

That is a deliberate strategy, and it works in the market it targets. The W series has always sold to buyers who want the most expensive Samsung in the room, and the gold accents and China Telecom partnership are signals, not specs. But it also highlights how stratified the foldable market has become. At the top end, Samsung now sells a $2,850 phone in one country while Apple sells a $1,999 foldable globally and is already replacing cracked displays under AppleCare.

Should you import one?

For buyers outside China, the honest answer is no, unless the exclusivity itself is the purchase. The W27 has no announced launch outside China, and imported units would face the usual problems: no local warranty, uncertain network band support, and software tuned for China. The standard Fold 8 Ultra gives you the same chip, cameras, and displays for hundreds of dollars less, with a warranty you can actually use.

The W27 is still worth watching, for one reason. Samsung uses the W series to test how much the market will bear at the very top, and the answer this year is $2,850 and up. If that sells out on November 13, expect the next global Ultra to creep upward too. If it does not, the ceiling for foldable pricing may finally be in sight.
