Apple spent years saying a touchscreen Mac was a bad idea. On October 28, at its “Pro and tell” experience in Los Angeles, the company changed its mind in public. The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is the first Mac you can touch, and it goes on sale November 6 after pre-orders opened the same day as the announcement.

The headline is the screen, but the price is the part that will decide who actually buys one. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, both with the M5 Pro chip. Step up to the M5 Max and the same two sizes start at $4,499 and $4,799. Those are starting prices, and custom configurations climb from there. In India, expect the usual Apple premium over the dollar figure once local pricing lands, and education pricing in the US knocks $150 to $300 off each starting configuration.

The PROLED XDR display, and why the name matters

PROLED XDR is Apple’s name for a tandem OLED panel, the same two-layer OLED approach it uses on high end iPads. Apple claims up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness for HDR highlights, up to 1,000 nits of sustained full-screen brightness, and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Those are two different brightness figures for two different situations, and buyers should not read the peak number as what the whole screen sustains.

The panel refreshes adaptively from 10Hz to 120Hz, covers the P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, and replaces the camera notch with a Dynamic Island, the pill shaped cutout first seen on the iPhone. On the Mac it houses Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI, which now has a memory of its own in iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2, as we covered in our Siri AI settings guide.

Apple says the touch sensor is built directly into the display panel rather than layered on top, which it claims reduces latency, and that a redesigned hinge keeps the screen from wobbling when you tap it. That hinge is doing real work here. A laptop screen that shakes every time you touch it would make the whole feature feel like a gimmick, and Apple knows it. The company also claims up to 24 hours of battery life, and both sizes are lighter than their predecessors: 3.0 pounds for the 14-inch, down half a pound, and 4.0 pounds for the 16-inch, down 0.7 pounds.

Every starting price, including education pricing

ModelChipStarting priceEducation price
14-inchM5 Pro$2,899$2,749
16-inchM5 Pro$3,399$3,199
14-inchM5 Max$4,499$4,199
16-inchM5 Max$4,799$4,499

Both sizes offer up to 128GB of unified memory and storage up to 16TB. Ports are generous by modern laptop standards: three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe charging, and a headphone jack. The M5 Pro model drives up to three external displays, the M5 Max up to four. A six-speaker array with a new woofer design handles audio, and the glowing Apple logo on the lid is back for the first time since 2016.

Do not confuse this with the M6 MacBook Pro

Here is the trap in Apple’s own lineup this week. A day before the touchscreen models, Apple announced a separate 14-inch MacBook Pro with the newer M6 chip, starting at $1,999, plus an M6 iMac starting at $1,499. That M6 machine uses a standard Liquid Retina XDR display, not the PROLED touchscreen. If you buy on chip number alone, you will miss the display you actually wanted, and if you buy on display alone, you will pay $900 more and get an older chip family.

The distinction is simple once you see it. The touchscreen PROLED models run M5 Pro and M5 Max, the chips for developers, video editors, 3D artists, and AI developers. The M6 models are the entry level line, faster and more efficient than the M4 machines they replace, but without touch and without OLED. Before checkout, check the exact display name on the configuration page, not just the words “new MacBook Pro”. We laid out the full event week, including what had already launched before the main event, in our October 28 event buying guide.

What this means if you are buying a Mac now

If you already own an M-series MacBook Pro from the last couple of years, this is not an upgrade trigger on its own. Touch on a laptop is genuinely useful for scrolling, scrubbing timelines, and tapping controls, but it does not change what the machine can do, and the M5 Pro and M5 Max are the same chips as the current non-touch models. Wait for hands-on reviews to answer the two questions Apple cannot answer for itself: whether the hinge really holds steady under repeated taps, and whether macOS 27 feels designed for touch or merely tolerant of it.

If you are buying your first high end Mac, or replacing an Intel machine, the decision splits cleanly. The M6 MacBook Pro at $1,999 is the value pick. The PROLED touchscreen models are for buyers who specifically want OLED contrast and touch, and who accept paying $2,899 or more for it. Either way, both lines arrive November 6, so there is no reason to rush a pre-order before the first reviews land. Apple’s Mac week, capped by this launch, also sits alongside a busy iPhone roadmap, with three more iPhones reportedly due in spring 2027.
