Apple released iOS 27.2 on Monday, October 26, and it is the first major update to the iOS 27 software that arrived in September. It is available for every iPhone that runs iOS 27, including the iPhone Duo, and it arrives alongside matching updates for iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, Vision Pro, and HomePod. The headline features are a smarter Siri AI, five new languages, and a hidden watermark on AI-generated images. The redesigned Health app, meanwhile, did not make the cut.
If you followed our update-day checklist, you are already prepared. Here is what actually shipped, what changed for the Duo, and the one feature you will not notice until someone checks your photos.
Siri AI can now remember what you told it
The biggest change is memory. Siri AI can now recall past conversations, so you can ask about something it told you before, like a restaurant it recommended last week. It also draws on more sources for answers, including photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, voicemails, and better results from Safari history and Reading List.
Two controls arrive with the extra context. Excluded Apps lets you choose which apps Siri, Search, and suggestions can access, all from one setting, replacing the old per-app exclusion flow. Granular text selection lets you select and copy just the part of a Siri response you need, instead of the whole answer.
Siri AI also speaks five more languages: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Apple says Chinese, Norwegian, Turkish, and Vietnamese will follow by the end of 2026. Two limits remain: Siri AI is still not available in the European Union or mainland China, and it still requires an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. Every other iOS 27.2 change works on all supported iPhones.
What the iPhone Duo gets that other iPhones do not
The Duo gets its own additions in this release. It gains support for the Apple Pencil (USB-C) on both displays, plus Edge Light, which illuminates your face during video calls. We covered what Duo Pencil support costs and what works when the release candidate landed, and the final build matches it.
Apple also released iOS 26.7.2 for iPhones that remain on iOS 26. That update contains security fixes only, with none of the new features.
Messages, Photos, and the apps around the edges
Beyond Siri, the update touches a long list of apps. Suggestions in Messages, a feature from the iOS 27 beta that was removed before launch, is back: tappable shortcuts appear in conversations based on context, so you can add a dinner invite to Calendar or track a package with a tap. Shared Albums in Photos can now edit captions and comments, avoid duplicate photos, and warn before an album expires.
Elsewhere, the Podcasts app gets separate New Episodes and Continue Playing sections on its Home tab, the Apple TV app gets Simple Profiles for each household member, the Games app gets a Friends tab with context on suggestions, and FaceTime can add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call. In the European Union, the update adds an expanded prompt for App Tracking Transparency, shown once a year.
The Health app redesign was pulled before release
Not everything from the beta made it. The redesigned Health app, which appeared during iOS 27.2 testing, is not part of the final build, as we noted when the release candidate arrived. Apple has deferred it to a later point release, with no date given. If you were waiting on the new Health app, this update is not the one.
Your AI photos now carry a hidden watermark
The quietest change may be the most consequential. iOS 27.2 adds support for SynthID, Google’s tool for identifying AI-generated content. It watermarks images at the pixel level rather than in metadata, so it is meant to survive cropping, filters, and compression.
Every image created with Image Playground now carries the watermark. In Photos, images altered with the Extend and Reframe tools are watermarked too, while Clean Up watermarking depends on the size of the edit: small touch-ups escape it, larger edits do not. There is no on-device detector on the iPhone itself. To check an image, you need the SynthID Detector website.
For most people this changes nothing day to day. For anyone publishing AI-assisted photos, it means the edit history is now embedded in the pixels, whether or not you mention it.
The rest of Apple’s lineup updated too
watchOS 27.2 brings the same Siri AI changes to the Apple Watch, with faster responses and the same five new languages and the same EU and China exclusions. HomePod 27.2 adds Sound Glow, which lights up the top of the speaker in sync with music, on the second-generation HomePod and HomePod mini, plus a Lock Controls option to disable touch controls. The HomePod mini 2 ships October 30, with Siri AI coming later, and the new Apple TV 4K arrives November 13.
To install, go to Settings, General, Software Update. The update is free, and on the Duo it unifies the foldable with the rest of the iPhone lineup on the same iOS version for the first time since launch.
