Calif Jailbroke the iPhone Duo on Launch Day, and the Clip Is Only Six Seconds Long

Apple’s first foldable iPhone went on sale on October 23, and it did not survive the day unhacked. Security firm Calif.io posted a six second clip on X showing an iPhone Duo whose home screen icons and widgets slide and tumble out of their grid as the phone is tilted. The Weather and Calendar widgets rotate out of place, app icons drift away from their usual positions, and a small animated character appears on screen. Calif credits hacker LCFR as the inspiration for the modification.

The clip is short, and what it does not show matters as much as what it does. It shows no restart, names no software build, and identifies no vulnerabilities. That means one central question is still unanswered: whether this Duo jailbreak survives a reboot the way Calif’s earlier demo did.

Paris proved persistence, the Duo clip does not yet

Seven days earlier, on October 16, Calif demonstrated an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.0.1 at the Hexacon conference in Paris. That demo showed the full sequence: the phone rebooted, the passcode unlocked it as normal, and the jailbreak came back on its own, followed by a root shell over SSH. It was the first publicly demonstrated untethered jailbreak since the iOS 9 era, close to a decade ago. We reported the Paris demo as it happened, and the reboot is what made it historic rather than just impressive.

The Duo clip, reported by iClarified on October 23, is a different kind of evidence. A home screen that rearranges itself when the phone tilts proves that code is running with enough privilege to alter the system interface, which is not something an ordinary app can do. It does not prove the modification persists after a restart, and Calif has not said so. Until a reboot is shown, or Calif says more, the honest description is a launch day jailbreak demonstration, not a confirmed untethered jailbreak on the Duo.

What Calif has already said about a public tool

There is still no jailbreak tool for anyone to download, for the Duo or for any other iPhone on iOS 27. Calif researcher Stefan Esser told Heise that the company does not plan to release a tool for end users, although it may publish a proof of concept. Esser also said the bugs behind the Paris demo had already been reported to Apple or were due to be disclosed soon, and that most were already fixed in the iOS 27.2 beta.

That last point sets the clock. The Duo ships on iOS 27.1, a version Apple built only for the foldable, while every other current iPhone sits on iOS 27.0.1. iOS 27.2 is expected publicly in the week of October 26. If Esser’s account is right, the window for whatever Calif demonstrated on the Duo is measured in days, not months.

Why the Duo was the predictable second target

The Duo shares the A20 Pro chip with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which is why Redmond Pie and others in the scene treated a Duo demonstration as likely once the Paris chain existed. The Duo went on sale at $1,999 for the 256GB model, in Star White and Night Sky finishes, after pre-orders sold through quickly. A $1,999 foldable running a Duo-only software build was always going to attract researchers first, because its software had the least real world testing behind it.

There is also a separate, practical thread for Duo owners that arrived the same day. Researcher Johnny, known as @0xjohnny, checked the Duo’s day-one iOS 27.1 firmware and reported that two bugs he had been tracking still appear unpatched on it. We cover what that means for Duo owners, build by build, in a separate guide.

What Duo owners should actually do

For almost everyone who bought a Duo, the advice has not changed: install iOS 27.2 the day it arrives. A jailbreak demonstration is not a product, and the same undisclosed bugs that let researchers rearrange a home screen are the kind of flaws that matter to security, not just to customization. The demo is a warning about the state of iOS security research in 2026, not a reason to delay a patch.

For the small number of people who care about preserving a jailbreak option, the decision point is iOS 27.2 itself, and our guide to staying on iOS 27.1 lays out the tradeoffs before that update lands. For everyone else, the six second clip is best read as a preview of a busy week: a new foldable, a new firmware, and a security update that will decide how long any of this stays possible.

One warning never gets old, and this week it matters more than usual. Any website now offering an iPhone Duo jailbreak download is a scam. Calif posted a six second clip, not a tool, and there is nothing legitimate to install.
