Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone Duo at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, October 16. Thirty minutes later, the launch was effectively over. Every color and storage combination on Apple’s US online store showed an estimated delivery date of January 25, 2027, and launch-day delivery has not been offered since.
Customers who completed checkout in the opening minutes kept the original October 23 delivery date. Everyone after them was pushed into late January. MacRumors recorded the January 25, 2027 date across all eight configurations by 5:30 a.m. Pacific, and 9to5Mac found the same date still in place at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, with some buyers seeing January 29 instead.
Thirty minutes from launch day to late January
The slide happened in stages. Delivery estimates first slipped into November, then December, then late January, according to TipRanks. By the time most of the US East Coast woke up, the entire first allocation was gone. Apple described pre-order demand as “nothing short of extraordinary” in a statement reported by CNBC, adding that it is working to get the phone into customers’ hands as quickly as possible and will keep accepting orders online.
The delivery picture on pre-order morning:
| Configuration | Estimated delivery |
|---|---|
| Star White, 256GB and 512GB | January 25, 2027 |
| Star White, 1TB and 2TB | January 25, 2027 |
| Night Sky, 256GB and 512GB | January 25, 2027 |
| Night Sky, 1TB and 2TB | January 25, 2027 |
| Orders completed in the first minutes | October 23, 2026 |
The pattern repeated outside the US. In Malaysia, where pre-orders opened at 8 p.m. local time on October 16, SoyaCincau found most first-batch stock gone within an hour. New orders through Apple’s Malaysian store now show delivery from January 22, 2027 onward, and authorized retailers including Machines and Switch have sold out most configurations online.
Walk-in buyers may be out of luck on October 23
The retail launch is still scheduled for October 23, but buying one in person looks uncertain. Gadgets360 reports that Apple may not entertain walk-in purchases on launch day because of the stock shortage, and MacRumors notes that Apple switched off in-store pickup for pre-orders, telling customers to check back on October 24. Engadget adds one wrinkle: Best Buy’s website was showing November shipping estimates, suggesting third-party retailers held back some of their allocation.
For readers catching up on the device itself, our pre-order guide covered the benchmarks and pricing: a 5.4-inch outer display that unfolds to 7.6 inches, the A20 Pro chip, and prices from $1,999 for 256GB to $3,199 for 2TB. Apple has not announced India pricing, but at current exchange rates that works out to roughly Rs. 1.8 lakh to Rs. 2.9 lakh.
The $5,000 eBay listing
Where Apple runs out, resellers step in. One eBay listing for the 2TB iPhone Duo was marked sold at $5,000, a premium of more than $1,800 over Apple’s $3,199 retail price, or roughly Rs. 4.5 lakh. It is a familiar pattern for constrained Apple launches, and a reminder that paying over retail rarely makes sense once supply normalizes. Apple has given no revised delivery window and has not said how many units it allocated to launch day.
Demand, supply constraint, or both
The bigger question is what the sell-out actually signals. Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Anurag Rana and Josh Christensen believe iPhone Duo sales could exceed their earlier forecast of 14 million units and $28 billion in revenue for Apple’s fiscal 2027. They also see room for Apple to lift the iPhone’s average selling price: if existing iPhone Pro and Pro Max owners switch to the base iPhone Duo, the price paid rises 82% and 67% respectively.
Context helps. Foldables are still a niche: just over 2% of global smartphone units, but nearly 7% of industry revenue, according to IDC. By 2030, IDC expects foldables to account for 10% of revenue on only about 3% of units. “Duo is fast becoming an aspirational foldable,” IDC’s Nabila Popal told CNBC, noting that the technology is not new, but Apple is bringing it to an enormous installed base for the first time.
There is a supply side to this story too. Apple raised iPhone Duo production by 30% before pre-orders opened, which suggests the company expected strong demand and still underestimated it, or that foldable display yields remain the binding constraint. Either way, delivery estimates stretching three months out point to a genuine imbalance, not a manufactured sell-out.
How to still get one before 2027
If you want a Duo this year, the online store is the worst option right now. Check Apple’s retail stores on October 23, when launch-day stock lands, and check back on October 24 for in-store pickup slots. Carrier stores and third-party retailers like Best Buy are showing shorter windows than Apple.com. In Malaysia, telcos including Maxis, CelcomDigi, U Mobile and Yes 5G still list units, mostly the 256GB model. And if you are on the fence between Apple’s two flagships, our iPhone 18 Pro versus iPhone Duo comparison breaks down whether the foldable is worth twice the price.
