In the aftermath of the title’s sale to American Media Inc. for $100 million, its legendary former editor-in-chief Janice Min reveals some unknown facts about the one-time darling of publishing. And, long before BuzzFeed, people used to blame Min for ~The List~.
The place used to mint money.
Before Instagram and Snapchat, the publication made $1.80 per issue sold on the newsstand after the initial 500,000 sale. Many weeks it moved 1–1.3 million on the newsstand, ringing up an extra $1 million in cash. Ad pages were $95,000 a page, subscriptions went for $69 a year. (And you wonder why publishers have been slow to move off the print model?)

And the typical reader was 32, female, and college-educated.
