Competition is all around us. In fact, it is a way of life. It also somehow gives meaning to what we do. When you watch movies, you would easily see movies that are centered to the idea of victory. Movies such as “The Fast and the Furious” would even have a famous line (delivered by Vin Diesel), “It doesn’t matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning is winning.” When you watch television shows, competition is all around for sure! From shows like “Fear Factor” where the toughest survive against all worst nightmares, to “Jeopardy” which is the battle of minds, it is sure to be there. In fact, the idea of competition has been so great that even cooking shows have been affected already. Shows like “Iron Chef” and “Throw Down with Bobby Flay” all post the idea that there is a challenge and one will remain victorious. Indeed the idea of competition has been highly supported by the various types of media and the entertainment industry alike.
And this is of no surprise. After all, life is but one big climb to the top. We start of as little kids striving to either be the top of our class, or the best in little league. We see this as the way to be somehow accepted and admired by our peers and as teenagers; this would be something which we would highly desire. There is without a doubt that the idea of battle is engraved to us as kids. But as we grow up, things become a little different. This time, it is not just the battle the matters. It’s the winning that counts.
With the idea that when we grow up, winning is the key, one of the best examples is the football franchise, the Pittsburgh Steelers. This Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based team has been one of most successful, if not most, in the history of the NFL. As of the year 2006, they have already appeared in 6 Super Bowl Games and is one of the three teams who have been able to win the Super Bowl for Five Times! The team has also made an appearance in 13 Conference Championship Games and holds the record as the most number of conference championship games than any other Football team in the National Football League. There record of winning four Super bowls within six seasons is yet a record to be beaten in the NFL by any other team. But here is the clincher: this franchise has remained to be family owned by the Rooney Family from its beginning and continuous to be so.
Whether it is the Heinz field, where the team is currently playing on, or the Three Rivers Stadium, or the Pitt or Forbes Field, this team is a powerful team and definitely the team which everyone wants to charge at and beat. Yet, this won’t be that easy. They have already made their mark. If you need a good example or role model, then this is it!
