Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) took apart Donald Trump for attacking women’s rights two days after the March On Washington.
In a statement, Sen. Booker said:
Two days after millions marched across the country and on all seven continents to stand up for women’s rights, President Trump clearly hasn’t gotten the message. With the stroke of a pen today, he has endangered access to family planning and comprehensive health care programs for women and children in some of the world’s poorest countries.
This harmful policy, known as the Global Gag Rule, has been implemented before and has, contrary to the stated aims of those who support it, coincided with rising abortion rates in some countries most reliant on American family planning aid. It is well known that improved access to family planning services is closely linked to improving health outcomes, addressing poverty and jumpstarting economic growth; this action will not only threaten maternal and child health in developing countries, but work against American interests throughout the world.
It is difficult to imagine a bigger sign of disrespect to women who took part in the March On Washington for the purpose of protecting their right to control their own bodies then to bring back the Global Gag Rule.
While some Democrats are praising Trump for the executive action on TPP, let’s look at the big picture of what Donald Trump has done so far as president. Trump has executive action that has weakened and undermined the Affordable Care Act, thus setting the stage for 30 million people to lose their access to healthcare, and has injured the health of women and children around the world.
Don’t be fooled by one little executive order on TPP. This is not a president who will learn anything from a single day of action. Donald Trump doesn’t deserve your praise. He deserves every ounce of your opposition.
