Those looking to “downsize” from the too-big-to-fit-into-my-pocket smartphone market may want to take a hard look at Apple’s new iPhone SE.
The phone offers plenty of the same features found in its larger counterparts, all wrapped in a smaller package.
The device is light and compact. It comfortably fits into your hand. Though only 4 inches, it is still powerful.
The SE utilizes the A9 chip, the same one found in the iPhone 6s with a 64-bit architecture. Apple’s latest iOS9 operating system is also included.
Users will find the retina display found on nearly every recent Apple product and a 12-megapixel camera for high quality photos and 4K video. 4K is touted to be four times the resolution of 1080HP video.
The retina display can act like a flash for Facetime and illuminate photos in low light and at night.
Apple says the phone is crafted from bead-basted aluminum with matte-chamfered edges. It has a Siri activation feature where you don’t have to pick up the phone to use it.
Signing up for the iCloud photo library allows one to store all photos and videos. They can be edited and updated on all devices.
Security is featured with the Touch ID. Like other Apple products you can use your fingerprint to unlock the device.
Business users will appreciate a faster way to download apps than that on the iPhone 5s. This includes up to 150 Mbps over LTE and up to 433 Mbps over Wi-Fi.
The phone supports voice over LTE and Wi-Fi for higher quality wideband calls. If you have an Apple watch you can stay connected with Bluetooth technology.
A number of apps are on the device. Messages will let you send texts with photos, videos, and links. Facetime provides video calls to other iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
The Apple Pay app can be used at participating stores and restaurants.
Pricing is the lowest ever for an iPhone. Models start at just $399 for a 16 GB model. 64 GB will add another $100.
Colors include space grey, silver, gold and rose gold.
While the iPhone SE is not being touted as an Apple breakthrough device, the iPhone 7 is certainly next in line for that and could be on the shelves in the fall, it does serve a purpose for those who do not need a larger view to read documents or do not mind the lack of a few bells and whistles found on the bigger devices.
At a lower price, in a more portable size, the iPhone SE may be the perfect choice for anyone who wants to hold a part of the Apple ecosystem right in the palm of their hand.
