A Windows operating system’s registry files are data base type entries which are central to the operating system’s ability to perform its instructions. Simply put, a Windows OS would do nothing if its registry were missing! A registry, like any Windows file structure, is constructed in hierarchal form. In other words, there are a few big folders with many folders and files contained within them. The main folders are called hives.

Each hive has its main point of interest. For instance, there is one hive that contains all the information about the current user of the computer, one that contains information about all the computer’s users and one that contains all the information pertinent to the computer the operating system is installed on.

5 Registry Hives

In all, there are 5 registry hives in Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7. Windows ME and earlier operating systems were constructed of 6 hives. For several reasons corruption has become a major issue for the registries of Windows XP and Vista. Probably, it will remain a mortal enemy of Windows 7 as well. Some of the reasons registry corruption has become a big concern in the registries of these newer operating systems are:

· Bigger operating systems accommodate bigger software programs and the bigger the program is the more corruption it will leave behind when it is changed, removed and upgraded.

· The OS itself is composed of much larger registries than their previous counterparts and so there are many more areas for corruption to infect than there used to be.

· Computers and internet connections are much faster these days, so registry corruption will accumulate much faster.

Consider this about the last point. Computers themselves are 10 to 30 times faster than those of 6 to 7 years ago and internet connections are as much as 3,000 times faster than they were just a few years ago. This much information flow tends to build corruption in the registry at a rapid pace.

The Negative Consequences of Registry Corruption

Registry corruption will make a computer slow after a significant amount of it accumulates. Sometimes the computer can become very slow due to corruption. Stalls, freezes, errors and crashes also can be attributed to corrupted registry files.

The good news is corrupt registry files can be repaired by using a registry cleaner. Cleaning the registry will, most times completely restore a computer’s lost speed and stop all the crashes, freezes, errors and stalls that are associated with it. Also, many registry cleaners include registry optimizing software as part of their programs. Optimizing an operating system’s registry can increase the computer’s speed even more than simply cleaning it will.

The bottom line is; as horrible as the effects of this ubiquitous registry corruption is, it no longer holds any special power over our computers because of the introduction of registry cleaning software.
