The Windows Error 1606 error is a type of error that plagues many computer systems around the globe, specifically those using the Windows system. Typically, the error occurs when a user tries to install or remove a Microsoft program.

What Causes The 1606 Error?

There are several causes of the error 1606. Mainly these include any updates or installations made in the Microsoft system. For instance, the problem can occur when the user tries to upgrade the Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition or the Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition to a Microsoft Windows XP SP1 or simply to Microsoft Windows XP. Other causes include program installations in a system using Microsoft XP. If administrative tools or functions are also accessed, the computer may also encounter the problem. If the computer is experiencing this type of error, the user will know about it if these messages appear:

  • -Error 1606. Could not access network location .All users .
  • -Error 1606: Could Not Access Network Location

How To Fix Error 1606

There are many issues contributing to the error, but primarily error 1606 occurs if there is an incorrect setting in the registry such as: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer Shell Folders Common Administrative Tools. In other cases, it's the result of registry subkey errors:

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer User Shell Folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer User Shell Folders

As mentioned, the registry: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer User Shell Folders" is typically the cause for such problems. The registry string is connected to the control panel's administrative tool. Thus, it usually does not appear when you attempt to access it and there is an associated problem. To fix the problem, follow the steps provided.

  1. Go to Start and then Click Run .
  2. Type in Regedit to the box that will appear and then press enter.
  3. Using the opened registry editor, go to this registry key:
  4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft
  5. Windows CurrentV Explorer User Shell Folders.
  6. Go over to the right pane and then look for "Common Administrative Tools" . Select and then double click.
  7. In the Value Data box , type in the following command: % ALLUSERSPROFILE% Start Menu Programs Administrative Tools
  8. Close the registry editor and then restart the computer.

It's important to take every necessary precaution in doing the procedure specified above. Registry editing can be a very sensitive process and one wrong move can damage the system or add more problems. It should not be altered carelessly because the operating system will get damaged all too easily. The procedures will help solve the broken registry string. If these procedures did not work then proceed to the next method.

It's highly recommended that you also clean out any registry errors that your PC may have as well. The registry is a large database which stores important settings & options for your computer – and is what Windows computers use to help keep their settings as fresh as possible. We've found that because there are so many important settings inside the registry, many Windows computers will generate errors because of this part of your system. To fix this problem, it's recommended that you use a registry cleaner application to scan through your PC and get rid of any parts of the problems that are inside the registry.
