Beyond monikers, there should be a reason why cars are called "babies" by most people. Parents should have chosen their pediatrician already before a real baby is born. Similarly, before (or immediately after) buying a car, an owner should have comprehensively skimmed through references that would direct him to a reliable auto repair shop.

Here are a few helpful tips to consider in choosing an auto repair shop:

1. Know a couple of tricks first

Even if you are not a car specialist, it helps to have some know-how up your sleeves. Basic auto knowledge will not only come handy during emergency car problems but it will also give you enough understanding of how your car will be handled by auto repair shops. Having a good idea on what is wrong with your car will tell the service handlers that you cannot be hoodwinked or misled.

2. Ask suggestions from your car dealer

Your dealer most likely has linkages with dependable auto repair stations, especially if we are talking about high-end car brands. The car dealer usually has partnerships with accredited shops that are experienced in fixing their car brands. You will find comfort in knowing that the referred shop can appropriately provide quality car parts and workmanship.

3. Take time to "shop" around

Before entrusting a big investment to other people or a company, it is important to know where your vehicle will be taken and how it will be handled. Shopping around for auto shops will enable you to actually see the kind of service a shop can provide. It will also show you if it has enough space and equipment to make your car comfortable while it is out of your own garage.

4. Find online reference

Car repair shops that have websites are likely to be more reliable than those without, especially if they are not from your neighborhood. In going through their websites, you could find a couple of important things like certifications, membership to an automotive repair association, and customer feedback. These are essential factors that will help build your trust in a service provider. Apart from looking up a business certificate, it will also help if you look up the each repairman's certification. No matter which shop you bring your car to, it will fall in the hands of one (if not a handful of automotive technicians) who will be responsible for the end result.

5. Have car buddies

If you don't have friends who have huge fondness for cars, it's time to meet up with some. You can learn lots of car repair tricks from them and they can also help you in choosing a good auto repair shop. Your car buddy's good judgment and experience with breakdowns and fix-ups are reason enough to trust their reference.
