Becoming an Auto Glass Installer

It can be dangerous for a driver if you have a windshield that is chipped or cracked but this can be easily remedied by having an auto glass installer efficiently and quickly replace your damaged windshield. You can take your vehicle to their place of business but there are also mobile auto glass installers that come to your home or place of business to install the new windshield.

It you want to pursue this career you will need be familiar with cars in general, great customer skills, and the ability to learn. This job can be stressful and demanding but at the same time give you a feeling of accomplishment to know the roads are safer because of your skills. To work as an auto glass installer, there are few educational requirements. Most companies require that you have either a diploma from high school or its equivalent but there is little prior training required. While in high school, you should take shop and math classes because in this job you will be using math to calculate the glass size needed to fit in the windshield. You are also going to be handing power tool. Most companies that hire auto glass installers will offer training on the job.

When working as an auto glass installer there is many jobs that you will have to learn. One of the first jobs is learning how to use manual and power tools for getting the damaged piece of glass out and getting rid of it safely. You will also use those same basic tools to install the new glass. One such tool that you will learn to use is am air-powered suction gun. This tool will let you move the entire windshield easily in one piece. You will also need to learn how to deal with customers, which is done by working the at the counter. Here you will:

• Answer the phone and answer the customer’s questions

• Receive vehicles that needs a windshield or window replaced

• Estimating the time and cost it will take to complete the job

• Accepting the payment or filling out forms for the insurance company to pay the bill.

Some of the necessary skills that you will need can include:

• Have great hand-eye coordination since you are dealing with glass that is delicate and will have to pick between different pieces of window glass.

• Good communication skills because you have to receive and give instructions from co-workers and talk to customers

• Patience because it can take some time to get the glass installed correctly

When you work as an auto glass installer, you can work at a dealership or specialty shops that only deal in repairing and replacing auto glass.
