Drivers never know when they will witness an accident, be involved in an accident, or be somewhere where someone needs a bandage for a cut. Because of the uncertainty, all cars should have a first aid kit that is capable of handling at least minor emergencies.

There are a number of places to acquire a pre-made first aid kit ideal for a car. Many of the kits on the market are designed to fit in a glove compartment or console and are quite compact. Other, larger ones, are designed to go in the trunk of the car or under a seat. If buying a pre-made kit, it all depends on personal preference.

If an emergency kit is made at home, it is important that none of the objects be in glass bottles or vials. These vials or bottles can break in the event of an accident and cause more problems when shards of glass cut the person attempting to use the product inside the vial. Anything that starts out in glass should be placed into a plastic container with a tight lid instead.

For cuts and other injuries, a whole list of supplies are necessary for a first aid kit. For starters, some absorbent compress dressings are necessary. These are excellent for stopping the blood flow of a wound and for preventing contamination. Adhesive bandages, also known as Bandaids, in a variety of shapes and sizes are also important. Because absorbent dressings do not come with any sort of way to fasten to the skin, adhesive cloth tape is important.

Other important ingredients include:

– Antibiotic ointment

– Antiseptic wipes

– Aspirin

– Space Blanket

– A breathing barrier with a one-way valve

– Instant cold compress

– Non-latex gloves

– Hydrocortisone

– Scissors

– Roll bandage

– Sterile gauze bandages and pads

– An oral, non-mercury thermometer

– Triangular bandages

– Tweezers

– First Aid instruction book

In case of auto emergencies, a car should also have a vehicle tool kit. This is useful for accidents or after witnessing an accident. The tool kit should include:

– Phillips and flat head screwdrivers

– Pliers

– A set of socket wrenches

– Duct tape

– Electrical wire tape and spray

– A flashlight and set of extra, working batteries

– Fire extinguisher

– Jumper cables

In addition to the tool kit, a car needs to have a jack and a lug wrench. Before getting on the road, it’s a good idea to check that those items are accessible and that the spare tire is inflated to its proper pressure.
