OnePlus launched the OnePlus 16 in China on October 12, and the most important number on the spec sheet is not the 200-megapixel camera or the 9,000mAh battery. It is the price: CNY 5,999 for the base 12GB/256GB model, roughly $845 or Rs 86,000. That is about 50 percent more than the OnePlus 15’s CNY 3,999 starting price. The company that built its name on flagship killers now charges flagship money. The question is whether the hardware earns it.
What CNY 5,999 actually buys
The OnePlus 16 is one of the first phones to ship with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, a 2nm octa-core chip running up to 5.01GHz with an Adreno 850 GPU that Qualcomm calls Matrix Cores. It pairs that with up to 16GB of LPDDR5x Ultra RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage.
The display is the standout: a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED panel at 185Hz with 2,000-nit local peak brightness and 3840Hz PWM dimming. OnePlus says supported games can run at a native 185fps, enabled by a new Fengchi (Windspeed) gaming kernel and a three-chip esports system: the P4 Super Display Chip, the Lingxi touch chip, and the G3 network chip, built to cut latency and keep frame rates stable during long sessions.
The camera system is headlined by a 200-megapixel 1/1.4-inch main sensor, a big jump from the OnePlus 15’s 50-megapixel main, alongside a 50-megapixel telephoto (Sony IMX882, 3x zoom) and a 50-megapixel ultrawide, plus a 50-megapixel front camera. An XPAN-style shooting mode and a Master Mode cater to enthusiasts. The battery is a 9,000mAh silicon-carbon cell with 100W wired SuperVOOC and 50W wireless charging, though wired charging is a step back from the OnePlus 15’s 120W.
OnePlus 16 vs the competition
| OnePlus 16 | OnePlus 15 | iQOO 16 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| China starting price | CNY 5,999 | CNY 3,999 | CNY 5,999 |
| Chip | Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 | Previous-gen flagship | Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 |
| Display | 6.78″ LTPO, 185Hz | 165Hz | 165Hz 2K |
| Main camera | 200MP, 1/1.4″ | 50MP | Flagship-grade |
| Battery | 9,000mAh, 100W wired | 7,300mAh, 120W wired | ~8,000mAh class |
The comparison table reveals the pricing problem. The OnePlus 16 starts at exactly the same price as the iQOO 16, which also runs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and also targets India. OnePlus used to win by being cheaper than the competition at the same performance. Now it is priced the same, and its display and camera have to do the talking.
The memory-cost squeeze behind the hike
The 50 percent price increase is not pure greed. RAM and flash prices are climbing industry-wide, and we saw the same squeeze hit the Pixel 10a this month, which Google raised to $599 and Rs 55,999 without changing a single spec, reportedly because AI’s appetite for memory is driving costs up. OnePlus is absorbing the same reality: bigger RAM, bigger storage, bigger batteries, and 2nm chips all cost more.
Still, the timing is awkward. China’s autumn flagship wave has four phones shipping the same 5.01GHz chip: the iQOO 16, Xiaomi 18 Pro, Motorola Signature 27, and now the OnePlus 16. When everyone has the same silicon, the differentiator is everything else: display, cameras, price, software. OnePlus’s answer is the 185Hz panel and the 200-megapixel camera, and it is a credible answer, but not a $2,000-cheaper one, because the price advantage is gone.
India and the rest of the world: wait and watch
OnePlus has not announced international pricing or launch dates. Open sales in China begin this week via the OPPO online store. For India, tipsters point to December 2026 or January 2027, with an OnePlus 16R expected around Rs 70,000 to Rs 75,000. The wrinkle: the iQOO 16, Xiaomi 18 Pro, and Motorola Signature 27 are all confirmed for India with the same chip, so the OnePlus 16 will not arrive in a vacuum. If it lands at a converted premium over the OnePlus 15, Indian buyers will have cheaper same-silicon options from day one.
The OnePlus 16 is a genuinely stacked phone, the 185Hz display and 9,000mAh battery are segment-defining numbers, and the 200-megapixel main camera answers the one consistent criticism of the OnePlus 15. But the flagship-killer story is over. At CNY 5,999, OnePlus is asking you to believe it is a flagship brand. The hardware might justify it. The price alone no longer sells itself.
