How to Speed Up Internet and Make It Really Fast

Are you trying to figure out how to speed up internet on your device? Read this article to learn tips to make your internet faster.

While the nationwide average internet speed is 50.2 Mbps, some Americans still have to deal with slow internet connections.

Slow connections are a pain. If you have to wait for the online channel to buffer so that you can continue to enjoy your movie, you may want to speed up your internet. Several things can affect the speed of your internet.

Therefore, if you want to know how to speed up internet, here are some tips that you should consider:

Extend Your WiFi Network

If you want to make your WiFi stronger so that it can reach every room in your home, you may want to get a WiFi booster or extender. These devices amplify the weak signal to enable every part of your home to have a strong signal.

A WiFi speed booster will get WiFi signals from your router and broadcast it. The function of the booster is to rebroadcast the signal to areas where the WiFi is weak or non-existent, thus improving the internet performance in your home.

There are several boosters available in the market. Before you buy one, ensure that you speak to an expert to get the right one that will offer you the best service.

Reboot Your Router

Do you remember the last time you gave your router a break? Well, it is time to do just that. It would be best if you give your router some time to rest at least once a month. This will help refresh your internet connection.

If you are using a modem, reset it too so that you can stimulate the connection to your ISP.

Your router is like a mini-computer, it caches information, holds background processes, and holds memory. When you reset your router, it will reconnect to several data channels, and this will help you connect to a less-crowded and more efficient channel.

You may want to get a timer and plug your router into it so that it can turn the system on and off every night.

Check for Unauthorized Connections

Your neighbors and other unwanted visitors might be using up your bandwidth without your knowledge if it is unsecured. Whether they are using it intentionally or not, when a lot of devices are connected to your WiFi, it may slow down the internet.

Check your security settings and go through your connection logs to know if you have any unauthorized connections. You may want to check the instructions on your router for the correct LAN IP address, which connects the router through a web browser.

If there is an unauthorized device, block it if your router has that option. It would be best if you also changed your WiFi password.

Typically, you don’t need to go the extra mile for security if you have a viable internet service provider (ISP) present in your area. ISPs such as AT&T, Xfinity, and Spectrum have robust security measures in place to prevent malicious activity. Check out high speed internet service providers in your area and skip any worries that might be plaguing your mind.

Use a Wired Connection

Today, almost everybody uses a wireless connection. This is great because wireless offers convenient and awesome service; however, they are not always fast. Wired or cabled connections such as Ethernet are more reliable and faster than wireless internet.

Connect your laptop, desktop computer, TV, PlayStation, Xbox, or other gaming consoles to the internet using a cable. The cable will send the signal directly to the devices instead of relying on over-the-air transmissions, and this increases speed.

Wired internet connections are also more secure than WiFi, so you will be able to keep your banking and any other information very private.

Install or Run an Antivirus

It is not recommended to access the internet without malware scanning software. If you do not have one, you need to install an antivirus immediately. Virus or malware prowling on your devices can drag your internet speed.

Once you have installed antivirus, scan your devices for viruses. You can also set it to scan regularly so that you are always protected. If the software finds existing viruses, get in touch with a computer technician so that they can remove it.

Turn off Apps That Run on the Background

Some applications do not affect your bandwidth. However, some have been designed to upload and download data continuously. Applications such as Dropbox and AOMEI Backupper are key offenders.

Check your Task Manager for the apps that are pulling down data if you are using a Windows computer. Do a scan on the Network section to check for the apps.

It will read 0% if there is no app drawing your data, but if you notice any fluctuations in the percentage, close down the app.

If you use Mac OS X, open up the spotlight, type “Activity Monitor” in the search bar.

Clear Your Browser Cache

As you visit various websites or enter some information online, your browser collects some bits of information about you. This information is often in the form of cookies. Marketers use that information to send you ads and other stuff based on your browsing behavior.

If you have noticed that there is an ad that always pops whenever you are online, you can be sure that you have some cookies and trackers. To get rid of them, you might want to clear the cache on your browser.

Even though the cookies help you load some sites faster, the cache might also be the reason why some pages load slower. You can clear them manually or install a plugin to help clear them in one click. Make this a habit so that the accumulated data do not affect your speed.

Consider These Tips to Know How to Speed up Internet

When it comes to knowing how to speed up internet, the solution might be as simple as changing your router position or needing to check your software. Regardless of the method that works, you should not forget to run a speed test with every step. This way, you will be able to tell whether what you are doing is working or not.
