TIG Welders – Knowing The Advantages And Disadvantages

Of the many welding techniques that exists, TIG welding is one of the most demanded probably next only to SMAW (stick welding). This allows a good job opportunity for TIG Welders. But just like any other method, the technique also comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Here they are:

Advantages

TIG Welding has its own advantages which makes it perfect and better suited on select situations. Here is a list of them:

Non-consumable electrode

Other methods like Stick Welding also known as SMAW makes use of consumable electrodes. This is also good in some way. However, the welder must halt his work occasionally in order to replace the consummated rod. This can have an impact on the overall quality of the finished product. On the other hand, TIG Welders use a different arc with a non-consumable electrode which allows for continuous and undisturbed work resulting in a flawless finish.

With filler metal or without

There is also a good amount of versatility enjoyed by TIG Welders. For instance, they can work using a consumable filler metal to create a weld fill. This is suitable for many applications. However, there are situations wherein a filler weld is not necessary as in the case of autogenous welds.

Good for non-ferrous metals

For beginners, it seems natural that welding should work for all types of metals. But this is not the case. Until around the 20th century, welding non-ferrous metals or metals that are not iron based is a very challenging task. TIG welders on the other hand can work with these metals without a problem. These include non-ferrous metals like aluminum, copper, and magnesium.

Disadvantages

There is however a reason why several welding techniques are employed in different industries. This is because each method has its own set of disadvantages.

More complicated

TIG Welders are generally more skilled and better trained. And this is only rightly so considering the greater complexity of the method and the higher skill requirement of the techniques applied. For example, great control and accuracy is necessary to keep the arc at just the right distance from the work pieces. But if you master TIG welding, you might be highly demanded in the field.

Slower method

Here is another problem with the method which makes it perhaps less productive on certain situations. Although the finish is generally more desirable compared to SMAW for example, the time consumed by method is also generally more. This makes it better suited for quality-oriented finishes but not on quick repairs.

Safety issues

The use of non-consumable electrode is an advantage. However, it also works to a disadvantage. Being non-consumable means the absence of flux coating which covers consumable rods. This result in the absence of smoke screen which helps blur out the light show and make the process more endurable to the eyes. Therefore, TIG welders are exposed to greater intensity of light which can also cause something similar to sunburn other than potential eye damage. These however can be remedied by wearing of correct gears.
