I love music…
In fact I grew up wanting to be a musician and then halfway through college I enrolled at a music institute to learn how to play the guitar. On my first day of learning at the music institute, I was given the guitar curriculum meant to cover the period of my studies at the music institute.
And also I had to buy a guitar tutorial book recommended by the guitar instructor, which I did. The guitar tutorial book covered Western music style of playing the guitar. And prior to my enrolment at the music institute, I had no knowledge of guitar playing, I was an absolute beginner.
It was not easy learning the guitar but I excelled, in fact I graduated the best guitar student among my peers. But I still wanted to further my guitar education, I wanted to learn more. And what I really wanted to learn was to play highlife guitar
But it was difficult because I couldn’t find available comprehensive materials on highlife guitar style. In fact there was no available detailed material on any African guitar style…
I searched online, I went to popular book stores, I even inquired from professional highlife guitarists but to no avail… and some of the guitar video tutorials I saw online was taught by foreigners who had little understanding of that kind of music…
If I could, I would compose a tutorial book on an African guitar style. If I could, I would work with a guitarist who plays and understands African guitar music and compose a tutorial book on an African guitar style because it is shameful when I search on Google search engine for African guitar style and the most I get are videos that are mostly ‘cover songs’ of famous African music
I don’t believe African guitar music is inferior. Even though we tend to think this way since our music is influenced by foreign music.
African Legend Fela Kuti created Afro beat style of music, and we celebrate him. We are proud of the recognition and appreciation Fela’s creation has received from the rest of the world
If I could, I would do more to contribute to the development and appreciation of Africa.
DO UNDERSTAND that we are yet to begin to tap into the awesomeness of Africa and the only way is to love which is to show appreciation for Africa.
