The Purpose of Valentine’s Day

The middle of February holds a special place in the celebration of love. Though the origin of the holiday is unclear, Valentine’s Day has been a holiday of romance for centuries. These days, couples take this opportunity to share their tender feelings towards each other. Sharing their feelings of love is not easy for many people. They may struggle to find the right gift to show their love.

Greeting card companies and florists often receive a lot of their sales revenue during the month of February. Television commercials and past experiences may have taught people that these traditional gifts are the way to show their love on Valentine’s Day. In fact, Christmas is the only holiday for which more cards are purchased than on February 14th. Candy and jewelry are other common gifts for this holiday of love.

However, a personal gift often is appreciated more than something cliché like a box of chocolates or a dozen roses. If the gift is related to a personal interest, the person probably is going to appreciate the thought put into selecting the gift rather than giving a typical Valentine’s Day gift.

Not everyone likes candles and dinners at a fancy restaurant. For some couples, such a dinner is almost expected for Valentine’s Day.

If the couple shares ideas of romance that is different from the traditional candlelit dinner, they may want to make plans according to their ideas of romance rather than the usual practice. For example, people who enjoy movies may want to cuddle up with some romantic favorites. Couples who enjoy the outdoors might enjoy taking a hike together or a moonlit walk rather than being in a restaurant.

Love is personal. Therefore, why wouldn’t the celebration of love also be personal? Buying and giving mass produced valentines is part of the tradition. Children often exchange valentines cards in school. However, a personal Valentine’s Day gift seems more appropriate for lovers in a relationship.

The idea is to make the holiday your own. The common gifts and dating ideas for Valentine’s Day may be very well suited for a couple. However, they may enjoy a personal gift and a date that fits their personalities and interests more. Before giving into the hype for cliche gifts and the typical romantic dinner, the couple should give some thought to making a special memory that is uniquely theirs for Valentine’s Day.
