So what does Valentines Day mean to you? I mean, is it really just a bunch of commercial garbage, and all about selling the American public piles upon piles of candy and hearts and expensive dinners and other garbage, or is it something that actually has some meaning for people. I asked a few random Americans to comment and here’s what they had to say on the subject:
Anne, 32 from New York: “What does Valentines day mean to you? Hmm. Well I guess it means that people are getting together and having a wonderful time. It means my boyfriend brings me some flowers and treats me like a queen for the day. Maybe we’ll go out for a romantic dinner and then a carriage ride around central park. Who knows? Maybe he’ll even ask me to marry him this year.”
John, 38 from Wisconsin: “What kind of a question is that? I hate Valentines day. What does Valentines day mean to you? I’ll tell you. My girlfriend left me on Valentines day last year. She ran off with my best friend. I heard they’re even getting married. I hate Valentines day and I wish they wouldn’t make such a big deal out of the stupid day. It’s just annoying.”
Lindsey, 24, from Florida: “Oh I just love Valentines day. I think it’s one of the sweetest holidays. My boyfriend proposed to me last year on Valentines day. He was so cute. He got down on his knee and asked me to marry him. I mean, I was dating this older guy before him and they were kind of friends, so we moved away, but now we’re so happy and we’re planning on a wedding this coming Valentines Day. So what does Valentines Day mean to me? It means my family is flying down from Wisconsin for the wedding.”
Well, there you have it. Of course, for everyone Valentines day means something else. To some, it’s a time to rejoice, to some it’s crass commercialism and for some, it’s a time to break up with older boyfriends and then move across the country. Whatever Valentines day means to you though, make sure that you treat that special someone in your life to a good time. He or she deserves it. After-all, it’s not easy to find love in this crazy mixed up world of ours, is it?
