Carnevale Season In Rome

Italy’s historic capital Rome is still one of the most popular travel destinations for British holidaymakers, and this month sees a number of high-profile events taking over the city – from Valentine’s Day to Mardi Gras.

Curious tourists are still flocking in droves to the ancient city, which was recently found to be the fourth most popular travel destination for UK visitors in January, according to Budgetplaces.com. Despite the global economic downturn, tourists are still eager to see Rome’s world-famous landmarks and experience its rich historical and spiritual culture first-hand.

For many, February is a month dominated by romance, and Rome has long been established as one of the world’s hotspots for Valentine’s Day breaks. The festival can trace its origins back to this city as a tribute to fifth century St Valentine, and ever since, Rome has been a major destination for romantic escapes. This year’s Valentine’s weekend looks to be no exception, with hotels and venues across the city dedicating their efforts to providing couples with a romantic weekend to remember.

Rome’s city centre looks set to be dominated by an even grander celebration this February however, with the triumphal return of the Carnevale festivities. The festive season prior to Lent takes on particular prominence in the holy city and has escalated in recent years. The Carnevale kicks off this week with the traditional parade of 60 riders on horseback beginning at Piazza del Popolo before heading down Via del Corso, accompanied by more than 100 performers in authentic historical dress.

The New York Times reports that this year’s celebrations are twinned with those in Venice, meaning that Rome’s Teatro dell’Opera will travel to perform in Teatro La Fenice while Venetian artists will lend their distinctive cultural flair to Rome’s proceedings, at a number of concerts and exhibitions being staged at various venues until 16 February. This year’s Carnevale celebrations will close in spectacular fashion with a Madri Gras concert headed by Italian singer Angelo Branduardi, who will perform with a variety of historical instruments to capture an authentic Baroque and Renaissance atmosphere.

With ideal temperatures and a packed calendar of events for travellers of all persuasions, February is the perfect month to take Rome flights and experience the Eternal City firsthand. Whether travelling with a loved one, with a group of friends or simply by yourself, the Italian city has plenty to offer anyone who visits.
