An Interview With Sports Radio Personality Steve Czaban

Steve Czaban has quite an impressive resume as a sports radio personality over the past 18 years. Steve has worked with all three major sports radio syndicates as well as filled in for Jim Rome on ESPN. We got to catch up with Steve to ask him few questions about his experiences as a radio talk show host.

Czaban, an avid Washington Redskins fan, says that his job is unique in that he can report on how the team is doing, while not having to worry about being unbiased. When asked about trying to put aside his allegiance to the Redskins while reporting, he responded: “Well, I don’t put it aside. I’m always horribly biased, but thankfully sports radio allows you to be biased and allows you to be a fan. I don’t think I’m delusional, but I am biased.” Steve later adds that while he loves to report on the Redskins doing well, he is also very honest about where they need to improve.

One of Steve’s famous catchphrases is “Where ya at? Whatcha Haulin’?”. As the name implies, truckers call in and announce their “Twenty” and what they’re currently transporting. The segment has now evolved into truck drivers announcing their “handles” as well as any interesting stories they might have. One of Steve’s most memorable calls involves a trucker calling in and saying he was hauling “Sailboat Fuel,” implying that his truck was empty and he was heading home.

Steve has always claimed that he was raised in the “mean streets of McLean,” a city in Northern Virginia. An alumnus of The University of Santa Barbara, Steve made multiple trips cross-country each year traveling to school. This long distance travel has made him appreciate the value of quality radio programming for truckers. “When you’re driving a long way, music is not going to keep you entertained the same way as a talk show you like,” added Czaban.

It should be noted, that we conducted this interview with Steve in early November 2008, and we asked “The Czabe” to give us his Super Bowl predictions. While Steve liked the Giants to win the NFC, he picked the Pittsburgh Steelers as AFC champs as well as the favorite to win the Super Bowl. “I really like the way Pittsburgh looks right now. Defensively, they’re just on a different level than most people,” explained Czaban. So hats off from us at CareersinGear.com Magazine to Steve’s correct pick!
