Your Favorite Classic Sunglasses

Perhaps most sunglasses brands today feature a variant or two of the classic Ray Ban Aviator Sunglasses than any other design, and these sunglasses that were introduced by Ray Ban in 1936 were originally meant for U.S. army pilots. To this day, they are by far the most popular sunglasses among Military personnel in the United States. Of course, that is not to say that they aren’t a hit with civilians, since most people identify the distinctive teardrop shape with sunglasses around the world. The aviator is a design that suits just about everyone. Whether your face is round, square or oblong, chances are that it will look good on you. Over time the handsome aviator has seen an amazing array of variations, not only in lenses and coatings, but also the thin wire frames that can now be bought in a thousand different materials and several different finishes. It’s one design that is very popular with both sexes, and with fans such as Megan Fox, one really doesn’t need a crystal ball to predict that the aviator will probably outlive everyone who wears a pair today!

It was in 1952 that the Ray Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses revolutionized the sunglass industry by breaking from the norm of metal shades that had till then ruled the roost. Fans such as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, John Lennon and JFK ensured that the Wayfarer was probably the most popular design of the 1950s and 60s! Once on the verge of being discontinued, the wayfarer is favored by the likes of Jessica Alba and Liv Tyler, and is again highly popular and is available in dozens of variants. With eminent brands such as Kate Spade, Marc Jacobs Sunglasses and Hugo Boss Sunglasses also offering great versions, the venerable wayfarer is a favorite for all seasons!

Mirrored sunglasses or “cop shades” are very popular with police officers in the U.S. and have had a considerable influence on our popular culture, having been worn in numerous movies. Part of the fascination for them probably lies in their ability to prevent eye-contact! Earlier designs had coatings that were often susceptible to scratching and degradation. Newer technology now offers metal layers in chromium and titanium, making them much more wear-resistant. The mirroring helps to further curtail light passing through the lens and makes such shades useful for extremely bright conditions such as sand and water sports.

Oversized sunglasses were very fashionable in the 1980s, and are to this day associated with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Since retro designs have become chic these last few years, somewhat moderately oversized glasses can often be seen on celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and remain in demand.
