This is a short and simple overview of the differences between the old Macbooks and the new generation of Unibody Macbooks. The list is by no means comprehensive but is rather a quick snapshot of key and noticeable differences.
Glossy vs Matte Display
The new Unibody Macbooks use a Glossy Display where as the old used a matte display. It’s been debatable which is better. Glossy Displays are suppose to help make the colors brighter and more crisp. However, some people dislike the glare that it gives, most noticeable when the notebook is outside in the sunlight, and thus prefer matte displays.
LED-Backlit Display vs CCFL Displays
The unibody macbooks and several of the old Macbook Pros are LED-backlight. This helps conserve the battery charge and the overall lifespan of the display.
Aluminum Unibody vs. Polycarbonate Shell
The unibody Macbooks use a single uniform aluminum enclosure to house the computer. This provides for a stronger and more consistent structural integrity for the Macbook. The old macbooks used a white or black polycarbonate shell, which is composed of several wielded components.
Mini DisplayPort vs Mini-DVI port
If you’re thinking of connecting your unibody Macbook to an external display, you’ll have to probably purchase a mini displayport adapter so that you can plug in the proper cables from your Macbook to the monitor.
No Firewire
Removed from the Unibody Macbooks is the FireWire 400 port
No Apple Remote vs Apple Remote
The Apple Remote used to be included in your Macbook purchase. Not anymore with the Unibody Macbooks. Apple Remotes can be purchased for about $20.
