How to Report Hit and Run Accidents: Top 5 Steps You Should Follow

Many people get into accidents every year. However, many of those people experience hit and runs, whether they be inexperienced and scared drivers, offenders, or those who simply don’t want to deal with authorities.

You should always report a hit and run, but there are also some steps you should take to make sure the situation goes smoothly.

A hit and run occurs in the United States every 43 seconds. So this very well could be you. Here are some things to do if you get involved in a hit and run.

1) Call 911 if Someone is Injured

Whether it be a regular accident or a hit and run if you are hit you should always call 911 to report the situation, especially if there are injured people involved. You should not try to move them, as you may harm them more than help them.

2) Get Witnesses

If you are okay from the accident, you should try to canvas the area to see if anyone else saw the accident occur. This will help to start the process of gathering evidence to help your possible case, first to the reporting officer, and later if it possibly goes to court.

You don’t have to go all over the place to gather witnesses and do not leave the scene. This can cause more problems for you in the long run.

3) Gather Evidence

By this time you have already started gathering evidence by canvassing the area for witnesses. But now this is the time to take photos of the accident and the local area that may help your case when the police arrive.

Make sure that you cover not just your car, but also the other person’s car if possible. Try to get as much information from them and about their vehicle as possible.

4) Don’t Admit Fault

One thing you should not do is admit to any fault for the accident. Do not divulge any excess information that is not pertinent to what the accident exhibited.

Also don’t apologize for any wrongdoing that will make you look like you are at fault. Cooperate fully with the others involved, but make sure there is no speculation.

With the evidence gathered, maintain your personal account of what happened and do not leave yourself liable by signing any documents unless they are official police or the insurance.

Also do not agree to withhold information or not report the incident to the police.

5) Contact Insurance

Although you don’t need to call your insurance company from the accident scene, you still should call them after the police to make sure that the claims are taken care of.

In accidents with serious injuries, they will tell you the process that must be exercised to support your claim.

Always Report a Hit and Run

Always act swiftly when you need to report a hit and run. this will help to mitigate the situation. Be sure to protect yourself by following these steps and you will be able to handle any situation effectively.
