Water Damage Phone Repair: What You Need to Know

If your phone has recently gotten water damage, don’t lose hope!

If you take the right steps, your phone may still be salvageable. There are several things you can do for water damaged phones that increase the likelihood that it’ll still work.

To help improve your chances, here is everything you need to know when it comes to water damage phone repair.

Remove the Phone From the Water (And Turn It Off)

Before doing anything else, remove the phone from the water as soon as possible and turn it off immediately.

Turning your phone on and pressing buttons can cause short circuits in your phone. The sooner your power it down, the better your chances are for saving it.

Disassemble All Removeable Pieces of the Phone

If you have a phone case, take that off your phone and dry it. If you have any other removable pieces, like a SIM card and phone battery, remove them as well.

These removable pieces can all hold in moisture, damaging it further. After removing these pieces, you can dry the parts individually.

Dry Your Phone With an Absorbent Cloth

After all removable pieces are taken off, use an absorbent cloth to dry your phone. Be as thorough as possible when you’re wiping it down. Any moisture that remains in your phone will continue to damage it.

If you have water damage on your phone screen, be sure to wipe that down, too. Don’t forget to dry any areas where damage could occur, like the charging port, the volume keys, or the headphone jack.

Try using a cotton ball or cloth piece around a toothpick to absorb excess water in areas of the phone that are harder to dry.

Allow the Phone to Dry on Its Own

After you’ve dried the phone as much as possible, it’s time to let it air dry. You can either put it in a bag of dry rice or let it dry on its own, but you should leave it for at least 48 hours before you try using it.

Test Your Phone

Once you’ve allowed your phone to dry, you’ve reached the moment of truth. Try turning your phone back on and using it. If your phone turns on right away, you’re in luck because it likely means you’ve saved it.

If you’re having problems turning it on or if your phone is acting strange once it’s on, consider taking it to a phone repair shop.

Now You Know the Process of Water Damage Phone Repair

Though water damage is never good, these steps can make a huge difference in the water damage phone repair process.

The most important thing is to act quickly. Make sure you remove the phone from the water as soon as possible and turn it off. To ensure that your phone stays dry in the future, consider purchasing a waterproof cover and case for peace of mind.
