How to Backup Your Photos on iPhone

One of the best features of iPhones is their cameras. The iPhone is a great option for keen photographers.

But there is one problem that every iPhone photographer experiences. That is, filling up their storage space. Before we know it, we no longer have space to take more photos.

So what do you do? You have to find a way to backup your photos. If you continuously backup your photos, you can always delete them from your iPhone.

We’ve put together this detailed guide on how to backup your photos on your iPhone.

The Guide on How To Backup Your Photos On Your iPhone

As long as you regularly have free space, you will be able to continue taking photos. The first step we request is that you organize your existing photos into folders. Organize them by date, location, theme, or whichever way you prefer. When you organize your photos, you will find it easier to locate them later.

You should also check out this site to learn how to recover any deleted photos from your iPhone.

  1. iCloud

The quickest way to backup your photos is by using Apple’s native backup storage service, iCloud. Your iCloud account will offer 5 gigabytes of storage for free. You can purchase additional gigabytes for a low fee.

If you have your Apple Account set up, you will be able to automatically upload your photos to your iCloud.

All you have to do is go to your Settings. Choose “Photos” and then select “iCloud Photos.” You can enable the setting to sync your photos with iCloud. Now, whenever your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi it will automatically upload your photos to your iCloud.

You can check your iCloud from the Photos app. If you see that all your photos have been added, you can delete them from the Photos app and free up space to take more photos.

  1. Syncing Service

The convenience of automatically syncing your photos to your iCloud is unparalleled. But its also important to not depend solely on iCloud – as great as it is. You should have at least one other cloud storage service to backup your photos. You can consider Google Drive and Dropbox as options. Once you make an account with a cloud storage service, download the app on your iPhone.

Access the cloud storage app and go to its settings. You will find a setting that allows for automatic syncing of your photos. Once you toggle this on, the syncing will happen regularly in the background – as long as Wi-Fi is enabled.

As with iCloud, check on your storage service to see if the photos were uploaded. Once they have been uploaded you can delete them from your iPhone.

  1. Computer Backup

Apart from using a cloud storage service, you can use your computer as a storage space for your photos. Your computer will likely have more storage space than your iPhone.

You can sync your iPhone with your computer. By connecting your iPhone through USB, you can transfer photos to your computer. If you are a Mac user, we recommend transferring the photos to your Mac’s Photos app.

Other ways to transfer photos is by emailing them to yourself or by using the AirDrop feature if you are a Mac user.

  1. External Hard Drive

Another storage option for your iPhone is to use an external hard drive. We recommending owning a few external hard drives. The more often you take photos, the more external hard drives you’ll have to invest in.

You can invest in one portable external hard drive – which can hold up to 4 terabytes. These can fit into a small case and can fit in a bag. These are perfect to take along if you are traveling and need to regularly backup your photo memories on a hard drive. You can also keep another external hard drive at home. You can find one that holds up to 6 terabytes.

As external hard drives can be damaged, it is always best to have at least one backup. If all of your photos fit on one portable hard drive, have a second one handy. If all of your photos fit on two stationary external hard drives, you should try to have at least two other stationary hard drives as backups.

  1. USB Flash Drive

You can also use small USB flash drives for backing up your photos. These will have limited space, usually not holding more than 2 gigabytes at a time. But these are best for short-term travel and for backing up a particular album or a few albums.

It’s always a good idea to have a few flash drives. Make sure you don’t opt for the cheapest option as these will not last long. Opt for a flash drive that is made by a well-known brand and that has a high storage volume.

  1. Storing Photos On The Web

Apart from cloud storage, there are other avenues for storing photos on the web.

You can always upload your photos to your Facebook and Instagram accounts and download them at a later time if you lose them. If you have a webspace, you can use an FTP client to upload your photos to your webspace. All you would have to do is enter the URL of the location of these photos and you can redownload them.

There are also a number of websites where you can upload photos and share them with your friends, such as Flickr and Google Photos. These are another great way for storing photos. If your photos are private, you can still upload them and set them as “private” so that they are not available for others to see.

As a final tip, we always advise that you use at least two of the options in this guide. The more places where your photos are backed up, the greater chance you have of recovering them at a later stage.

Take A Snap

Now that you know how to backup your photos, you can continue taking photos with your iPhone. Make sure you regularly backup your photos so that you will always have space to take more.
