Getting The Most Out Of Google Maps On Your iPhone 4S

Google Maps is a feature which is included as standard on the iPhone 4S. Many people are familiar with the app, but it can do a lot more than people realize. In this article I will look at some of the impressive characteristics of the software so you can make the most of it.

Google Maps utilises the GPS functionality of smartphones like the iPhone 4S which allows you to pinpoint your current location. To do this, simply tap the arrow in the bottom left corner of the app's interface. The app will then determine where you are, and drop a virtual pin on the map in a Birdseye view. You can then of course use the pinch to zoom function of the retina display to zoom in to the map to get a closer look at your surroundings. The pin will also be labeled with the current location which can be handy if you are lost. In some areas, you even have the option to view the map in street view. This allows you to view a 3D map which uses actual photos taken from a car in the location. If you use this feature in conjunction with the app's ability to provide directions, it can prove very handy if you need to find your way to a specific location.

The map can be viewed in three different formats. The first is the classic map view. This looks just like a real map that you would find in an atlas, and makes it easy to plan car journeys as all roads are clearly labeled. The second is Satellite view, which displays aerial photos of the location making it easy to spot landmarks. Thirdly, there is a hybrid view. This provides the best of both, as it has the detail of the satellite mode with the clearly labeled roads and locations from the standard map view.

Google Maps also allows you to plan journeys with its easy to use directions function. Simply type your destination and starting point into the appropriate bar and the app will automatically calculate the best route for you to take, with options including car, public transport and walking. You can even enable a traffic view which will highlight the roads with bad traffic conditions based on real time traffic data. This means you can then avoid obstacles like traffic jams which could potentially delay your journey.

Google Maps is an app which many unfortunately take for granted but as you can see it has a number of useful real world applications. With this app, your iPhone 4S is even more functional than ever before when used properly.
