Must-Have Tech to Kick Start Your Summer

Whether you’re after the perfect fitness tracker or looking to upgrade your smart TV, choosing the right tech can be a bit of a minefield. With that in mind, here are some of the best gadgets on the market right now.

Samsung Galaxy S9+

At face value, the new Samsung S9+ may not appear so different from last year’s S8, but look a little closer and you’ll realise that the real genius of this latest iteration is in the detail. For one, its Snapdragon 845 processor makes it one of the quickest phones around, easily outstripping the iPhone X when it comes to performance, and making for slicker, speedier downloads. Another big leap forward from the S8 is the phone’s dual-lens camera, which, unlike its predecessor, supports 2x optical zoom for sharper, clearer shots. But, perhaps the most impressive feature of the new Samsung S9+ is the integration of the larger screen into what is essentially a normal-sized shell. The 6.2-inch infinity display is brighter compared to the S8, and the edge-to-edge cinematic profile is perfect for video chat or watching your favourite movies. And, when it comes to gaming, the S9+ is in a league of its own. As well as a more uniform, game-friendly display compared to its closest rival, the iPhone X, the S9’s screen also has a greater pixel density (570ppi versus 458ppi) so, whether you’re playing Angry Birds 2 or live streaming casino games, the graphics are going to look that much sharper. The bottom line is that Samsung’s hardware design is still streets ahead of most of its rivals and the S9+ looks like the must-have phone this summer; a great addition to your tech armoury, though not exactly a snip at nearly £900.

Fitbit Versa

The original fitness tracker is back and this latest incarnation is better than ever. With a four-day battery life, 24/7 heart rate monitor and tonnes of music storage, this health and fitness smartwatch outperforms most other trackers on the market. With more than 15 different exercise modes, you can monitor your progress on the roads, in the gym, and even in the pool. With new features for 2018 like contactless payment and real-time coaching, this is wearable tech at its very best. And, for a little less than £200, this is one smartwatch that won’t leave you out of pocket.

Sony KD-75XF9005 TV

With the summer schedule chock-full of high-octane sporting events, there’s never been a better time to upgrade your TV – and the big winner with sports fans this year is the Sony KD-75XF9005. For one, its huge 75-inch screen makes for a truly immersive experience, with top-notch motion processing banishing any unwanted blur or judder. The 75XF9005 also features ‘Triluminos’ display, a new-generation backlight technology that delivers rich, vivid colours and pin-sharp contrast. Direct LED lighting and local dimming only add to the fiercely bright pictures, making the 75XF9005 perfect for the high dynamic range technology due to be unveiled by broadcasters over the next couple of months, with the BBC, for one, set to stream upcoming sports events in 4K and HDR.
